Pleased to share a new article (open access) on the topic of research assessment reforms, addressed mostly to the science studies community. It’s an invitation really to think about how our field can contribute to understanding this emerging reform movement within academia. There is a rich tradition of studying the reward system of science, peer review, academic careers, funding evaluation and more in our field. Much important work has been done to study these processes and practices, and to flag dysfunctions. But we have been strangely quiet on initiatives that have recently emerged with the intention of tackling many of these long-standing problems head on (e.g. CoARA, DORA, FOLEC-CLACSO). Here I focus on how the case for reform has been built, and how that case has been countered, taking the example of the Netherlands’ national initiative for reform. Much of the public debate over reform can be understood as resulting from different framings of reform’s meaning and its consequences. Sceptics of reform point to collective action dilemmas (e.g. ‘unless all levels of science systems move in unison, will reform work?’, ‘is collective action going to adversely effect particular groups or entities?’), while reform champions present more optimistic scenarios. The paper provides a conceptual framework for navigating debates and controversies over research assessment reforms, and beyond this, calls on science studies to pay more attention to this growing science reform movement that is taking mainstream so many of our longstanding interests and concerns. https://lnkd.in/e5nBWVgS

RoRI Research Fellow André Brasil was interviewed on the peer review crisis in the Instituto Quest?o de Ciência magazine. Rather than simply proposing financial incentives for peer reviewers, André argues for a systemic shift in how academic contributions are valued. He suggests that peer review itself should be recognized as a citable academic output, with a DOI and formal acknowledgment - ensuring that researchers are incentivized to conduct rigorous and transparent reviews without turning it into a commercialized service.
