Choices, choices, choices! There are too many of them these days. When it comes to design and human factors, that can be a bad thing. The Hick-Hyman Law illustrates that having more choices increases the time it takes for people to make a decision, highlighting the importance of simplifying options to reduce decision-making complexity, cognitive strain and mental fatigue. In medical device design, minimizing the number of choices users are presented with can be a powerful way to design safer systems. Our latest blog describes the Hick-Hyman law and why it matters in human factors. We hope you like it! https://lnkd.in/gCuTjkG9

In our ongoing series on Universal Principles of Design, we have thoughtfully examined the concept of the Five Hat Racks. We hope this exploration provides valuable insights for medical device designers looking to improve the clarity and usability of their instructions for use. Enjoy! https://lnkd.in/eYP-YvHu

Fitts's Law is all around us in design. It explains why the brake pedal is larger than the accelerator pedal, why keyboard keys get bigger on the outer edges of the keyboard, and why exit window buttons are often located in the corner of the screen. Our latest blog on design principles explains Fitts's Law, gives multiple examples, and offers simple guidelines for a more usable design. Give it a read and enjoy! https://lnkd.in/gevBWKaF

One of the most important design principles that medical device manufacturers must embrace is signal-to-noise ratio. The “signal” represents the critical information or functionality that needs to be conveyed to the user, while the “noise” includes any extraneous information or distractions that could obscure or detract from the signal. While easier said than done, designers should strive for the highest signal-to-noise ratio possible. To learn more about signal-to-noise ratio, why it's important, and how to consider it in your design, check out our latest blog by Anders Orn. https://lnkd.in/gVvNCEUS

We're excited to share our latest blog post, which reviews the FDA's newest draft guidance "Purpose and Content of Use-Related Risk Analyses for Drugs, Biological Products, and Combination Products." This guidance document offers valuable insights on conducting a use-related risk analysis (URRA) and how it can help determine human factors (HF) data needs during product development and support a marketing application. We hope you find this information helpful in navigating combination product development and the regulatory landscape! https://lnkd.in/gCUfKKEM
