An intermediary, aligning people, ideas, and resources to catalyze city change. Requity’s Carver House project trains vocation students to renovate vacant rowhouses into affordable green homes. Located directly across the street from the historic Carver Vo-Tech trade school, the Carver House enables?Requity?to align project learnings with vocation curriculums. By applying classroom lessons to authentic work, students in carpentry, construction design, electrical, masonry, and business are trained, equipped, and experienced for construction jobs and career pathways. The purpose of the pilot is to develop and test net-zero construction curriculum, place talent, and create a scalable framework.?The project intersects education with climate action and home ownership. In December of 2024, Requity won first and the grand prizes in the Department of Energy Community Energy Innovation Prize.

There is a significant number of vacant buildings, schools, and recreational centers in @Baltimore city, and I can’t help but think about the opportunity that exists to transform these spaces while simultaneously addressing workforce development. Imagine if there was a streamlined process to bring in apprentices in construction to not only help revitalize these structures but also gain hands-on experience and earn paid opportunities in the process. When I was growing up, I had the privilege of attending the John Eager Howard Recreation Center, where I was able to participate in all kinds of programs that kept me busy and engaged. I truly believe today’s youth could benefit from similar opportunities—spaces that help foster personal growth, skill-building, and a sense of community. This approach would not only benefit organizations looking to update their spaces but also empower the next generation of skilled tradespeople, providing them with the tools and experience needed for long-term success. It's a win-win situation: reinvigorating our community, developing talent, and supporting organizations that are doing impactful work. Let’s work together to make this vision a reality! #Baltimore #Construction #WorkforceDevelopment #SkilledTrades #CommunityRevitalization #RecreationalCenters #Apprenticeships Baltimore City Mayor's Office of Employment Development Baltimore City Department of Housing & Community Development

This initiative, spearheaded by Requity, provides vocational students with real-world experience in masonry, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, and sustainable building practices through the rehabilitation of vacant homes. At its core, the project serves as a "training house" where students engage in work-based learning, applying their trade skills to construct and deconstruct a high-performance residential structure. This cyclical model ensures students develop technical expertise while reinforcing critical soft skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and professional accountability. The integration of NCCER-certified curriculum ensures industry-aligned training, preparing students for careers in green construction and skilled trades. Beyond workforce development, the Carver House project addresses urban blight by renovating vacant properties, creating affordable, high-efficiency housing, and fostering local economic growth. Through strategic partnerships with construction firms, trade schools, and community stakeholders, Requity is creating a scalable blueprint for sustainable workforce pipelines and neighborhood transformation. By aligning education, industry, and community needs, the Carver House pilot is not just a construction project—it’s a proof of concept for how youth training, high-performance building, and community investment can converge to create lasting impact.
