Thought Leadership and Programs for the Redesign, Resilience and Regeneration of a Green, Inclusive and Open Economy

关于我们

r3.0 was established to convene a neutral, pre-competitive, global public good space for diverse stakeholders to co-create solutions whereby the sustainability community raises its level of ambition to play its rightful role in spurring a regenerative, distributive and restorative economy. r 3.0 does this by curating events (such as conferences, labs, and virtual online dialogues) and Blueprint Projects that gather Working Groups to collaborate on designing new structures that build off the foundations of existing standards and frameworks in order to recommend steps that boost transformation towards the ideal form of an economy that serves the wellbeing of all. The platform naturally fosters the type of collaboration that makes a new operating system for humanity possible. The Reporting 3.0 Platform was launched in 2012 by BSD Consulting with the aim to create a global multi-stakeholder community focused on identifying and fulfilling the potential of reporting to serve the intersecting interests of sustainability, financial performance, and growth. To better serve this interest and expand its public good value, an independent not-for-profit structure was established in late 2016 under the name 'Oncommons'.

I'm preparing slides for the upcoming 2nd r3.0 Bioregioning Open Dialogue of the year, focused on Bioregioning & Permaculture, happening this Thursday 20 February 4-5:30pm UTC / 11am-12:30pm ET. (Extra credit to anyone who identifies the sources of the 2 images in the graphic below :-) Ralph Thurm & I had great prep calls with the 3 speakers: Elyes M. speaking on how teaching the Permaculture Design Course informs bioregioning; Gloire Mudekuza speaking on how PLETHORA SOCIAL INITIATIVE trains refugees in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda in permaculture practices); and Julie Davenson widening the lens to look at permaculture in the context of regenerative agriculture, considering policy implications for transforming to bioregional bio-based economies. The calls reinforced what I had previously noted -- namely, the role of bioregioning and permaculture as means of enhancing *place-based* resilience, in particular for those who have been *forcibly displaced*. Global geopolitical dynamics make this specific issue particularly relevant, and exploring how bioregioning can anticipate forced displacement in ways that deeply support those displaced -- while also tapping into their creative energies to *enhance* bioregional regeneration. The session will take place on the r3.0 Zoom line: https://lnkd.in/erCXnDFs Meeting ID: 869 7864 0544 Passcode: 902564 We record all our Open Dialogue sessions, and post them (along with presentation decks) on our new Bioregioning Open Dialogues landing page https://lnkd.in/eBFCA3VE as well as sharing them on social media and in our newsletter afterwards. We also will offer a Google Document for tracking resources and comments (to keep the chat sidebar available for folks to pose questions.) I look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

The rumour mill around the CSRD and CSDDD isn't stopping. As some media already report the EU Commission plans to suspend its long-adopted regulations on sustainability reporting (CSRD) and supply chains (CSDDD) for one to two years. The proposal - part of the omnibus campaign - would be exactly in line of the European People's Party (EPP), which is calling for precisely these relief measures (for the economy). The plans are met with resistance from other parties in the EU Parliament, but the Commission is reportedly already threatening with consequences: it could resort to an expedited procedure - in which the European Parliament would largely be left out. What an ongoing turmoil. What remains? Some companies will be relieved, others disappointed as so much time and capacity already went into the ESRS readiness. But for both groups it gives more time to now also focus on 'authentic' sustainability reporting, totally compliant with all standards, and to breathe in deeply, as the ESG Progress Standards are still an open door to greenwashing. No double materiality doctrine prevents that, that's why to UNSDPI manual and training with a focus on context-based materiality are so important. For all that want to take the extra time to finally come to grips with 'authentic' sustainability reporting, join our February (25/26) or March (25/26) 2025 r3.0 UNSDPI Training. Note that after March we will reduce the sequence of these trainings from monthly to quarterly. Register at https://lnkd.in/e2T7Vxja

What a great 3rd session it was, the way to measure bioregional carrying capacities is now available through the series brought to you by r3.0 and the Design School for Regenerating Earth. And see below as well how to access the earlier two editions of this series!

Links are now available to the recording & decks for 3rd Session in the Bioregional Carrying Capacities Series, "Sweet Spots & Absolute Assessment" with Dr. Avit K. Bhowmik & Anders Bjørn. This Series is co-hosted by r3.0 & the Design School for Regenerating Earth. Here's where you can find these links: https://lnkd.in/gM6nuqyn And that link connects you to the overall series Landing Page, where you can find recordings and decks from the past 2 Sessions. A few reflections on this Session: I very much appreciated Avit's focus on the role of agency and innovation in terms of navigating the context of tipping points and collapse. I also really loved his story of how his "Powers of 10" study (which identifies the "sweet spot" of the community of 10k population as the scale of greatest opportunity for impact on climate resilience) introduced him to the concept of bioregioning, when bioregionalists reached out to him to apply his findings to their work. I also appreciated the line of inquiry Andrew Simpson seeded when he asked Avit to further the "sweet spot," with Stephen N. Davies, CMC noting Schumacher's notion of 500k population cities as the max level that can respect carrying capacity, and Billy Gridley chiming in that the context of bioregioning and regeneration may result in different sweet spot scales. Anders' presentation on his Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) approach (a study on this was published just this week! https://lnkd.in/gXquGp3F Though his presentation focused on an upcoming publication) triggered some important reflections, including from Neil Davidson asking if this approach takes into account that, due to Overshoot and Ecological collapse, Environmental Carrying Capacities will likely diminish (potentially catastrophically) not stay as (assumed as) a straight line. And Daniel Ospina Medina inquired how this approach fits into the voluntary v mandatory reporting / accountability theories of change. I *loved* Anders' slide that assessed the degree to which the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) complies with AESA's 4 criteria (Comprehensive: Yes; Granular: Yes; Consistent: Not Fully; Justice-attentive: No). Carrie Norton posed some broader questions to both, including how their thinking aligns with Doughnut Economics and the Commons (particularly in the context of ownership and power). And Sanjay Rajan closed things out with another broader question on the role of governance in navigating bioregional carrying capacity, with co-host Joe Brewer of the Design School bringing us home with an extended reflection on this question. I'm consciously dropping bread crumbs without encapsulating the totality of any of these issues, as incentive for you to view the Session itself, as it was a rich exchange of ideas. We're still determining the next Bioregional Carrying Capacities Session so stay tuned!

How troubled are you these days about the future of ESRS, ISSB or GRI Reporting? Is it weak, is it woke, is it useless, is it overburdening? Time to ask the question: What is it YOU want to achieve with the transparency you create? Is your ambition to be 'authentic' about your level of sustainability? Are you o.k. to learn about your level of unsustainability as well? The political discussion is pure turmoil these days. A situation that can be described as 'implosion' is on the horizon. The UNSDPI have been created to be objective, crystal clear and responsive to the duties and obligation owed to all life, based on context-based materiality. They paint a realistic picture how a license to operate can be kept, and a license to grow can be achieved. Join us for our next UNSDPI Training on February 25/26, and take a break from the turmoil. Please register at https://lnkd.in/e2T7Vxja and join group of like-minded from different countries to learn and interact.

Wonderful collaboration between r3.0 and the Design School for Regenerating Earth on 'Bioregional Carrying Capacity', already the third session. Joining this time are Dr. Avit K. Bhowmik and Anders Bjørn. Learn from two of the best in the field.

Join us in the Design School next Tuesday, February 11th at 10 AM Eastern for this special series on bioregional carrying capacity. We are excited to partner with r3.0 to host this series led by Bill Baue. Here is more about the session: "We at r3.0 are stoked to announce the 3rd in our series of Themed Dialogue Sessions exploring Bioregional Carrying Capacity, this time featuring two prominent scientists whose work we deeply respect: Dr. Avit K. Bhowmik, presenting on his 2020 "Powers of 10" study that identified "sweet spots" of scale (that align with the bioregional scale) for climate action; and Anders Bjorn, presenting on his Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) methodology, which integrates carrying capacity assessment at its core. This Session also represents an expansion of the partnership between r3.0 and the Design School for Regenerating Earth. We piloted the first 2 sessions for you, the Design School audience. Joe & Penny agree the sessions were so successful, it makes sense to expand them into public sessions. We appreciate this gesture, which further solidifies the already strong partnership between the Design School and r3.0." Become a member today and you can participate in this series with us: https://lnkd.in/guvJkrgm

r3.0 Bioregioning Open Dialogue 2: Bioregioning & Permaculture We invite you to join us on Thursday 20 February 4-5:30pm UTC (11am-12:30pm ET) for our second Open Dialogue, focusing on the intersection between bioregioning and permaculture, featuring 3 guests: -- Elyes M. of the Mediterrannean Bioregion Hub (in the Design School for Regenerating Earth) will share his experience applying permaculture in Tunisia, and teaching permaculture to bioregionalists; -- Gloire Mudekuza will share how PLETHORA SOCIAL INITIATIVE trains and supports residents of the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda in implementing permaculture practices to enhance the resilience of the food systems; and -- Julie Davenson of the Soil & Climate Initiative (SCI) will discuss the role of permaculture and other regenerative agricultural practices in the development of bioregional bio-based economies. One thing that particularly interests me in this session is the relationship between bioregioning and migration, given existing and projected trends of forced relocation globally due to ecological and social upheavals. We look forward to seeing you then! Please feel free to add your questions and comments here to inform our thinking going into it 🙏

Bioregional Carrying Capacity Session 3: Sweet Spots & Absolute Assessment We at r3.0 are stoked to announce the 3rd in our series of Sessions exploring Bioregional Carrying Capacity, this time featuring two prominent scientists whose work we deeply respect: Dr. Avit K. Bhowmik Bhowmik, presenting on his 2020 "Powers of 10" study https://lnkd.in/gQZCDmpf that identified "sweet spots" of scale (that align with the bioregional scale) for climate action; and Anders Bjørn, presenting on his Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) methodology https://lnkd.in/gruahqNU that integrates carrying capacity assessment at its core. This Session also represents an expansion of the partnership between r3.0 and the Design School for Regenerating Earth. We piloted the first 2 sessions for the Design School audience. Design School Co-Founders Joe Brewer & Penny L. Heiple agree the sessions were so successful, it makes sense to expand them into public sessions. We appreciate this gesture, which further solidifies the already strong partnership between the Design School and r3.0! The Session runs on Tuesday, 11 February from 10-11:30am ET. It will run in a fairly standard format of presentations of content to discuss up front (about the first half of the 90 minutes), leading into facilitated dialogue in the second half of our time together. You can access the session on the r3.0 Zoom line: https://lnkd.in/gswTJqsm Meeting ID: 819 5167 2148 Passcode: 902564 This Session also represents the kick-off of exploration of a Bioregional Carrying Capacity (BCC) Fund as an element of the Earth Regeneration (ER) Fund https://lnkd.in/gmBkdVmg. As you can see in this video https://lnkd.in/ggUPM4uA the ER Fund is a platform for steering the flow of resources that represent multiple capitals, not just financial capital. Another key capital resource is narrative, so we welcome the opportunity to expand the reach and richness of the story of bioregional carrying capacity measurement and management through this BCC Fund, to weave into the broader tapestry of storytelling supported by the ER Fund. Ralph Thurm and I deeply thank Joe & Penny for their collaboration on these multiple lines of exploration, and we also deeply appreciate the Design School community for engaging with such depth of care in the Bioregional Carrying Capacities dialogues thus far -- we look forward to further deepening the dialogue going forward! (Please note that these sessions complement our Open Dialogue series of monthly convenings, focused on the broader ecosystem of bioregioning.)

So pleased to annouced Ecotone has been accepted into the r3.0 Advocation Partner Program: https://lnkd.in/gzExquJy r3.0 promotes Redesign for Resilience and Regeneration. They are thought leaders in Context Based Suistainability and helped develop the United Nations Sustainable Development Performance Indicators. They conduct monthly training sessions on the UNSDPIs: https://lnkd.in/gN4K7r_4 which I highly recommend. I truly appreciate the openness of founders Ralph Thurm and Bill Baue to share their insights and engage on the difficult topic that sustainability reporting has become (or always was!) As is this wasn't a great story unto itself it gets better. You know how sometimes your different worlds collide, it happened with r3.0. For the last two years I have been getting more engaged with the Bioregional movement (https://lnkd.in/g-aB3Qsg) and connecting with the Design School for Regenerating Earth (https://lnkd.in/gF2bRy-n) And guess who is all in on bioregionalism - Ralph and Bill. Had the opportunity to met Bill in person at the launch of the Earth Regeneration Fund (https://lnkd.in/giWKVDhB) in Toronto last fall. Read Ralph's post on how bioregionalism is the way forward out of a collapsing world: https://lnkd.in/gsCEbt7b With gratitude. Joe Brewer
