Last week, thanks to our statewide partnership in #NorthCarolina (founded by The Assembly), eleven Report for America corps members based in seven newsrooms across the state gathered in Durham. Spearheaded by NC Local, the journalists gathered to connect, train and attend the 2025 NC Local News and Information Summit. Regional Manager Maria Elena Fernandez spoke with us about the significance of the gathering, higlighting how Report for America host newsrooms (like Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR) and Enlace Latino NC) played a key role in supporting communities and providing critical news in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. 关于我们
Report for America is a national service program that places talented emerging journalists in local news rooms to report on under-covered topics and communities. Launched in Fall 2017 and donor-financed, Report for America is creating a new, sustainable system that provides Americans with the information they need to improve their communities, hold powerful institutions accountable, and rebuild trust in the media. Report for America is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. GroundTruth is an award-winning nonprofit media organization with an established track record of training and supporting teams of emerging journalists around the world and in the United States.

Fantastic reporting by Report for America corps member Shannon Chaffers! Under the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), NYCHA is obligated to facilitate transfers for survivors of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, dating violence, and stalking. However, a recent report by the nonprofit Legal Services NYC found that these survivors have faced lengthy waits to move after being granted a transfer. According to statistics that NYCHA shared with the AmNews, the average wait time for a transfer is currently 799 days — more than two years. https://lnkd.in/gezATgRU
