With over 7.000 identified rare diseases nowadays it will take a long, long time before each patient will have access to a complete newly discovered and developed drug, not mentioning the fact that financial resources will run short when aiming at developing a treatment for each disease separately. Here, drug repurposing might provide a solution for at least a subset of those diseases. Shorter development pathways, possibly lower costs, an estbalished knowledge base as a starting point: ingredients that may result in new first-time treatments for new patient groups.
