Last month I had the extreme pleasure of attending Procurecon Connect, this time as a buyer, representing a Renhead customer. The intimacy of the conference and lack of selling efforts helped perpetuate deep conversations about so many different challenges procurement officers experience today.? Here are a few pieces of advice for both buyers and suppliers after sitting in both seats: To My Supplier Network:? STOP SELLING WHAT YOU CANNOT PROVIDE. It’s so easy to tailor your words in order to get the contract, but your brand will suffer for it. If you don’t have what’s needed, it’s better to map out what you CAN provide today versus what you can build, with 100% visibility and a roadmap. If those of you working for big logos are nodding your heads in agreement right now, you are not excluded in these conversations, as some of the biggest supplier brands were mentioned as big culprits. FOCUS ON THE PROBLEM. When you focus on the problem more collaborative conversations start happening. How many times have you heard various suppliers exclaim “they don’t even know what’s good for them!” Let’s translate that. You’re basically stating that you know what a buyer is going through and the business they support better than they do. Really?!!! I think not! STOP THE STALKING!!! Last year at a different conference I heard of a supplier following a buyer into the toilet. Just close your eyes for a second and imagine yourself in a dark alleyway when a stranger approaches you…..what will your reaction be? This is unacceptable behavior and no amount of desperation in a bad market will make me think otherwise. To My Buyer Network: BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. This is the foundation of any successful buying experience, so keep this in mind when going through your RFP process. When you’re too rigid, you miss the opportunity to glean important insights from casual conversations that may help identify either risks or opportunities that you wouldn’t have recognized from a shiny marketing deck or a well-prepared sales presentation. Yes, this takes more time, but trust me, it will save you much more time and money post contract. RESPECT A SUPPLIER’S TIME. Be respectful to suppliers who spend so much time and resources gathering information and provide full transparency into what your end goal is. Suppliers have a wealth of knowledge and experience in their particular areas of expertise and can help you with the right approach if you’re not yet aligned with your stakeholders. If you approach them with respect and visibility this is what you will get in return when you’re ready for an official RFP process. CHANGE COMES WITH RISK. Real transformation comes with risk but staying stagnant is not an option anymore. There are ways to mitigate your risk by asking for carve-out pilots and spending the effort to test the solution and relationship before a firm-wide implementation. Visibility is key here, as well as a supplier who will truly act as a partner when things get bumpy.?
