In the face of unprecedented load growth, the Texas legislature seems to brainstorming ways to make adding supply more difficult. Jeremy Zelinger provides an overview below.
Texas has led the nation in renewable energy expansion, but a new bill in the state legislature could slow the momentum drastically. Senate Bill 388 would require every new megawatt of solar, wind, or battery power to be matched with natural gas or coal, even as the state faces a power demand surge. Critics warn this could stall economic growth and threaten grid reliability, especially since supply chain issues mean new gas-fired power isn't coming online anytime soon. And SB 388 is just one of several proposals aiming to rein in renewables this session. Read below for more on these anti-renewable proposals and the reactions they're eliciting from the industry.
