𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐥-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐍𝐕’𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚. 🚢 💧 12 out of 25 alternative-fuelled ship orders were for #methanol. Orders spanned five different vessel types: tankers, car carriers, cruise ships, a bulk carrier, and even an offshore vessel. This momentum signals a growing confidence in methanol’s versatility and scalability as a marine fuel. History was made this week at the International Maritime Organization #MEPC83 meeting, where the world’s first global greenhouse gas pricing framework for any sector was agreed. The shipping industry is now on a clear path to net-zero by 2050, backed by a package of measures that includes emissions pricing, incentives for sustainable fuels, and support for a just transition in developing nations. This is no small feat. Amid complex global geopolitics, IMO member states reached a landmark interim agreement, which if adopted in October, could generate an estimated $12 billion annually to support the scale-up of clean fuels. 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 #𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙡 𝙛𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣? Methanol is emerging as one of the key options in the maritime energy transition, with methanol-fueled ships gaining momentum in new vessel orders. But more than that, methanol is a pragmatic and scalable solution. Throughout MEPC 83, the Methanol Institute worked closely with member states to: ➡️ Advocate for robust Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methods that reflect real emissions, ➡️ Highlight the availability of renewable and low-carbon methanol feedstocks, ➡️ Reinforce methanol’s critical role in a diverse maritime fuel mix. With the regulatory framework now aligning, the industry can accelerate its transition and methanol is ready to meet that demand.
