Kidney health is a shared aim globally— from my bustling city block to a remote island nation nearly 7,300 miles over my left shoulder. At the second biannual?Samoa Kidney Conference, Acting Prime Minister?Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio?highlighted?the escalating costs of kidney disease treatment, which have?tripled?over the past twenty years— from treating 16 dialysis patients in 2004 to 250 last year. That's how I heard about the work of the Samoa Kidney Foundation and this event that took place last week in Samoa's capital city of Apia. It's also how I learned about the work being done by Jimmy Thomas and the team at Renasolve, Inc., who shared?impressive results from their inpatient tele-nephrology and dialysis program at?Randolph Health?in Asheboro, NC. Over the past year, the program successfully treated 142 patients who would have otherwise been transferred to a tertiary facility thanks to their partnership with Outset Medical, Inc. Despite significant advancements in dialysis technology, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence, underserved communities continue to face substantial gaps in care. What is missing is innovative, risk-taking leadership dedicated to fundamentally transforming the paradigm of care delivery. There is a pervasive tolerance of the status quo, which hinders true progress in reaching and effectively treating underserved populations. To make a real impact, we need leaders who are willing to challenge existing systems and push for comprehensive, equitable solutions in kidney health care.
