One of the most common challenges that dementia caregivers face is their loved one's resistance to care.?Tasks that used to be simple and straightforward now require extra time, thought, and patience. This can be frustrating and draining for both caregivers and the person with dementia. When this happens, it's important to remember that their refusal to participate is often a form of communication — it can be their way of telling you they have an unmet need, something is making them uncomfortable, or they are in distress. Our experts share practical tips to help reduce a person’s resistance to care. A new JAMA Network Open study co-authored by Remo’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Meredith Bock looks at how people with Lewy body disease — which includes Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies — used hospice care compared to those with Alzheimer's disease. This study found that hospice use varies significantly between Lewy body subtypes and Alzheimer’s. Lewy body dementia patients were less likely to be discharged due to exceeding life expectancy, whereas Parkinson’s patients were more prone to leaving hospice early and had longer stays — suggesting unmet needs. Why does this matter? Findings underscores the need to analyze dementia subtypes separately for effective healthcare policy.
