Using Technology to Personalize Behavioral Health Treatments: It’s no surprise that behavioral health providers are exploring how technology and artificial intelligence (AI) can improve patient care and support clinicians. Issues like burnout, the nationwide shortage of clinicians, and administrative burdens can be (at least) partially addressed by new technology that streamlines documentation or remotely connects clinicians with patients. While these improvements are a step forward, they do not address a foundational issue in behavioral health care: treating patients with truly personalized care plans. It’s time that we move beyond relying on technology as just an administrative assistant and figure out how to incorporate it to deliver customized patient care. https://lnkd.in/gcUinfHh

Mental Health in Ancient Egypt: by?Kathleen M. Pike, PhD "I have spent the past week on a long-awaited trip exploring temples and tombs along the Nile. It has been a journey through time and place. From the pyramids to Karnak Temple, from kings and queens to pharaohs, gods, and goddesses, it has stretched my understanding of ancient history and got me thinking about continuities and discontinuities over the millennia. The hieroglyphs, statues, and mummies from thousands of years ago tell stories of war, leadership succession, cultural beliefs, and the evolution of ideas. Images of strength and long life abound. What about mental health?" https://lnkd.in/eZ9aVapf

How Does Stress Increase Risk of Injury? Stress impacts the body in a number of ways. The mind and body interact through a continuous flow of hormones, neurotransmitters and immune cells from one to the other. One such hormone, cortisol, is under the control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This elegant axis uses a biofeedback loop whereby a gland in the brain senses what is going on in the body and then releases chemicals that stimulate the adrenal glands in our stomach to produce cortisol, the “stress hormone”. Our brain also controls the release of a calming hormone. Oxytocin promotes growth and repair as well as creating feelings of well-being and reducing sensations of pain and anxiety. Stress also impacts our injury risk in other ways. Athletes who are under stress have reduced peripheral vision compared to athletes who are not stressed. Pressure also makes athletes more distractible and increases muscle tension. These factors lead to increased fatigue and crucially impair both timing and coordination predisposing to injury.

A survey by the American Psychological Association found that 38% of people felt their stress levels increased during the holiday season. Stress can lead to an increased risk of illness,?substance misuse, and higher rates of anxiety and depression. This was especially felt during the pandemic, when there were so many questions about how to keep events and?family gatherings during COVID-19?safe. https://lnkd.in/dk66TTV
