    Q) What is UClean's moat? A) Micro-entrepreneurs aka Our Franchise Partners. The man in the centre is hospitality personified. Pranit's father is one of India's top doctors. There was always the natural expectation that he would follow in his father's footsteps, but Pranit had his eyes set on hospitality. A naturally affable person, he is a born story teller. Armed with a post graduate degree in Hotel Management, he started his career working across some of Newzealand's leading hotels before the call of Swades got the better of him. Back in India, he worked during the day with a 5 star hotel while most of his evenings were spent brainstorming new ideas with his wife. He had been well and truly bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. His online research soon led him to UClean. One thing led to the other and soon he was sitting in our office to discuss starting a franchise in South Delhi. His hospitality background stood out during our first interaction. South Delhi is traditionally a challenging territory for businesses. Most of the neighbourhoods are affluent, customers have the money and are discerning. Loyalty is fragile and one single mistake can quickly lead to trust erosion. Pranit looked like the perfect partner for the territory given his background. It was end of 2021. The city was still recovering from the Covid onslaught and customers were wary of outsourcing their laundry. Choosing the right market was critical. A smart operator, Pranit chose the posh Green Park area in South Delhi to launch his store since this was where he had grown up. He knew the area like the back of his hand and had a network in place that he could leverage to get his first customers. It was only a matter of time before UClean became the favourite of customers in Green Park. Orders started flowing and repeat customers grew. His outlet in Green Park became cramped for space within 2 years and that's when he decided to go big. Shahpur Jat, known as fashion hub of Delhi, became the next pitstop. For the uninitiated, Shahpur Jat is where most of Delhi's up and coming fashion designers set up their stores. These clothes are generally expensive and require high quality drycleaning. Hence, UClean :) But the caravan doesn't stop here! Pranit has decided to take it one step further and locked the territory of Malviya Nagar in South Delhi - a popular student hub. Between a posh neighbourhood, a fashion hub and a students' favourite hideout, he has all the bases covered. India is truly a country of micro-entrepreneurs. January 17, 2017: We launched our first half-baked store in the posh locality of Vasant Kunj, Delhi. We cracked a desperate deal with the investor and the landlord to somehow get things off the ground February 8, 2017: The entire store was razed to dust due to a fire mishap caused by human stupidity. That human being me (story for another time) We literally gave up on our UClean dreams that day. Man proposes, God disposes. Something unexpected happened which can be best called a borderline divine intervention. UClean lived to see another day. And that has been the story. ??Fire ??Covid ??Protests by local dhobis ??Back stabbing ??Market set-backs Like most startups, UClean's journey has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We have had our own rise-like-a-phoenix-from-the-ashes events and moments where we literally felt like it's all over. We survived because there were more people who wanted us to succeed and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Today's 500th store launch is dedicated to each and everyone who has believed in UClean. To each and everyone who has secretly prayed and worked for the success of UClean. I don't intend to sound boastful, but I say this with a lot of pride that getting to 500 is not easy. Not many retail brands have done it. And few have done it in 7.5 years. We did it because we were lucky enough to have been surrounded by people who believed in the vision. People who were willing to overlook our sometimes half-baked, sometimes over-cooked business plans and instead focus on the larger picture. We survived and thrived because we had our parents' blessings with us. And of-course, the unexplainable divine intervention every now and then.     Q. What is my ultimate dream for UClean? A. That UClean should outlive me When we set out on the mission to change the way Indians do their laundry, the challenge was not merely about creating a brand. The bigger challenge was to create an industry that didn't exist until then: Laundromats. We had to work on driving a behavioural change. We had to convince people to move away from their homes and the Dhobi ghats to laundromats. As the industry and brand started gaining traction, we have spawned a series of Me-Too's, Lookalikes and some genuinely, serious competitors. The large sleeping giant, which is the laundry industry, is slowly getting out of its slumber mode ? Share of the organised players in the $50 Bn. industry has moved from <1% to 5%+ ? From 0 laundromats to ~3000 live laundromats. In just 7 years ? At least 100 laundry and dry-cleaning brands that work on the franchise format ? Another 100 odd brands in the cleaning industry that work on the franchise model And this is what makes this award extra special. We're super excited to share that UClean has been crowned "The best franchise brand in the cleaning industry for 2024" by Franchise India??The oscar equivalent for the franchising industry in India.
