?? Engaging discussions on the legacy of munitions at sea! ???? On January 17, 2025, REMARCO was invited to the German Embassy in Brussels for the dialogue event "Munition Legacies at Sea and the European Perspective." A lively panel discussion with policymakers and experts—including Tobias Goldschmidt, Sebastian Unger, Dr. Rüdiger Strempel, Tobias Troll, and Christos Economou—explored the history of dumped munitions, recent research findings, and remediation strategies. An insightful evening highlighting the urgency of tackling this environmental challenge! ??? #REMARCO #MarineConservation #OceanLegacy #PolicyDialogue #brussels ?? ???? HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission releases new report on Baltic Sea munitions The thematic assessment "Hazardous Submerged Objects in the Baltic Sea" addresses the issue of submerged munitions and hazardous objects in the #BalticSea, originating from both World Wars. These submerged objects pose a significant threat to human health, the marine environment, and various maritime activities. The HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission has been working since 1974 to protect the #BalticSea from pollution, and since 1993, it has also been addressing the issue of submerged munitions in the #BalticSea. Colleagues from #REMARCO from the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung and the Universit?tsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein have also contributed as authors of the document. They conduct biological and ecological studies in both the #BalticSea and the #NorthSea. Their research enhances the understanding of pollution caused by legacy munitions in both seas, providing crucial insights for managing these hazards. #GEOMAR thank you for having us! ???????? On Monday, 24th of June, 2024, #REMARCO joined the “Information Day on the Start of Systematic Clearance of Munition Contaminants in the Baltic Sea” at #GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany ?? The event was very informative, featuring exciting presentations from the Ministry for Energy, Agriculture, Environment and Nature of Schleswig-Holstein, the Federal Police, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service, the German Armed Forces, and many other experts. They explained their work, the subject matter, and the upcoming €100 million Immediate Action Program. After the official part, many participating actors presented themselves at information stands, enlightening guests about their work in munitions clearance. Three of our #REMARCO partners - #UKSH, #northio, and #SeaTerra - were also present. #REMARCO had the opportunity to engage visitors with the traveling exhibition from the predecessor project #NorthSeaWrecks from the #GermanMaritimeMuseum, showcasing our work in the North Sea. ?? Additionally, there were presentations by #REMARCO members Dr. Matthias Brenner and Dr. Edmund Maser, which were open to the public and well-attended by enthusiastic visitors who were able to ask personal questions regarding the topic during and after the talks. ?? The event was highly successful and enjoyable, hopefully bringing the issue closer to many people and achieving significant steps towards munitions clearance. ?? ? ?? It's a worldwide issue! ?? In December, 2023 the #UNESCO organized a regional meeting, on the threats and environmental issues related to World War shipwrecks in Southeast Asia. One of our #REMARCO collegues from the #VLIZ presented results from the previous North Sea Wrecks project. ?? The presentation underscored the pressing concerns regarding the munitions still on board World War-era wrecks. These concerns were prominently featured in the final recommendations of the recent meeting. ?? For more information about the meeting check out the link to the official #UNESCO article.
