Uniting changemakers in the fight for human rights and climate justice in the clothing industry. Take action ⬇️
关于我们
Today, our clothes are disposable and cheap, while the human and environmental costs required to make them are tremendous. For the millions of mostly 18 to 24-year-old women (who represent 80% of the fashion supply chain), these jobs can be the best first step out of poverty. Yet the industry is rife with low wages, inadequate worker protections, unsafe conditions, and unrest. The current system needs a remake, and we are here to do just that. Our mission is to build a conscious consumer movement. Remake tells stories that bring shoppers, brands, and makers into a movement to shape the fashion industry’s relationship with the millions of people in its supply chain. When we know their stories, we can use our collective voice and shopping dollars to improve and shape the lives of people who make our clothes.

The climate crisis is deeply intertwined with gender inequality. In fashion and across industries, women workers are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis as structural inequality and exploitative conditions are made worse by climate impacts such as rapidly rising temperatures and floods. "What we've heard from workers across South Asia is that the factory workplaces are already hot. The machines are hot, you have a lot of people packed into the assembly line. And now, because of record temperatures, we're seeing an increase of fainting, of dizziness, of health concerns, but these are not being tabulated and collected as directly correlated to the climate crisis." - Ayesha Barenblat 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record. Now, more than ever, we must take action to protect the rights of women garment workers across the globe. We're happy to collaborate with Devex to share stories on a Just Transition and why we can't leave women workers behind. Thank you to Ford Foundation for supporting this work! For anyone feeling defeated by the state of the world right now — history teaches us that progress often triggers backlash, as those who feel threatened by change fight to reassert control. Sociologists like Jack Goldstone have described this as part of the cyclical nature of social change. When a movement achieves a major victory, it can disrupt power structures, prompting a reactionary wave from those who benefited from the old order. This isn’t a sign of failure; it’s proof that the movement is working. Big wins force society to confront its deepest fears and biases, which can be messy and painful. But each backlash sets the stage for even greater resilience and progress, as movements learn, adapt, and build stronger foundations for lasting change. This cycle reminds us that every step forward, even when met with resistance, is part of a larger rhythm of transformation. Join us at http://remake.world, and get plugged into the movement in our next community call on December 2nd: https://lnkd.in/gVRz7Y-z

Amazon is launching a new $20-and-under mobile shopping experience called "Amazon Haul" to rival other fast fashion sites like Shein and Temu. Despite their goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, most of the clothing sold on Amazon Haul, unsurprisingly, seems to be made out of cheap polyester (aka fossil fuels). Remake's CMO Katrina Caspelich weighed in for Vogue Business: "We have big concerns about Amazon's recent Haul launch. The move encourages buying a lot of clothes at once, usually cheaply made, which means they often end up in the trash after just a few wears (if any)." With Haul, Amazon will be able to take advantage of the De Minimis loophole, which allows brands to ship packages to the US tax and duty-free, and make even more of a profit. At Remake, we're advocating for stronger labor protections, reshoring domestic apparel jobs, and ending exploitative practices in the fashion industry. We're also fighting to close the De Minimis loophole to protect workers and level the playing field for responsible fashion brands. We cannot shop our way to sustainability, even at the thrift store. The global resale market is expected to reach $350 billion by 2028, and while secondhand shopping is more planet-friendly, the rising prices of pre-loved clothing are becoming inaccessible to many communities. "Branded resale also saw a 31% year-over-year growth with a bevy of brands launching programs in 2023. These include H&M, Fabletics, J. Crew, Kate Spade, American Eagle, Smartwool, and Journeys. Even luxury labels like Gucci and Alexander McQueen, once closed to the notion of consigning their exclusives, jumped the bandwagon through partnerships with high-end consignment shops. This gentrification comes at a cost. As prices rise to match growing demand from middle and upper-class consumers, the very communities that have long relied on secondhand clothing are being priced out."
