Uniting changemakers in the fight for human rights and climate justice in the clothing industry. Take action ⬇️

关于我们

Today, our clothes are disposable and cheap, while the human and environmental costs required to make them are tremendous. For the millions of mostly 18 to 24-year-old women (who represent 80% of the fashion supply chain), these jobs can be the best first step out of poverty. Yet the industry is rife with low wages, inadequate worker protections, unsafe conditions, and unrest. The current system needs a remake, and we are here to do just that. Our mission is to build a conscious consumer movement. Remake tells stories that bring shoppers, brands, and makers into a movement to shape the fashion industry’s relationship with the millions of people in its supply chain. When we know their stories, we can use our collective voice and shopping dollars to improve and shape the lives of people who make our clothes.

A bit of good news to end your week: Recently, The Fashion Workers Act was signed into law in New York state. The New York Times highlighted the Fashion Workers Act as one of five key new laws that are set to change New Yorkers’ lives in 2025. "Beginning in June, models working in New York’s fashion industry will finally have rights and protections, including increased transparency into contracts and expenses, protection against harassment and abuse, and a formal channel for reporting violations without fear of retaliation. The Fashion Workers Act will require model management companies to act in the best interest of the people they represent and register with the state to protect against fraudulent practices. Models will have first-ever legal protections against the misuse of AI, setting a crucial precedent for how industries can protect creative workers in an era of rapid AI advancement. I look forward to sharing more about the rights we’ve won in the weeks to come." - Model Alliance Founder and Executive Director, Sara Ziff #slowfashionmovement #fashionactivism #sustainablefashion #policy #newyork https://lnkd.in/gPQxd8_w

The fashion industry produces more clothes than we will ever need.  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is not just a problem with individuals overconsuming, but a wider cultural issue of unnecessary overproduction for the sake of profit. The reality is that brands are producing at a rate that is unsustainable for consumers, and it affects communities on a global scale. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Knowing this dumping our donations at the nearest Goodwill should be a last resort.  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First we must shift to consuming less, choose pre-loved when buying "new" and elongate the lives of our clothes we already have.  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then, there are many ways to place garments directly into the hands of their next wearers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Such as a clothing swap, give them away to a friend, sell them online, donate them directly to on-the-ground organizations working with people in immediate need, or upcycle them into something entirely new or recycle them with an org who can.  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As caretakers of our clothes, we have a responsibility to ensure that they have the longest life possible.

Despite embedding resale and upcycling initiatives into their businesses, brands show no signs of slowing down as they pump out new products. As the resale market booms, circularity is frequently used as a greenwashing scheme to entice consumers. The volume of waste created by the insatiable demand for fast fashion has devastating consequences on the planet and people. The usage of Ghana and Chile as dumping grounds for secondhand clothing from the Global North also expose the injustices and inequality ingrained in the current systems and how communities are disproportionately affected. To achieve full circularity, the fashion industry must address its overproduction problem. Read more and see brand scores in our Fashion Accountability Report, linked here: https://lnkd.in/g5Dzbbne

Have you heard of Amazon’s new $20-and-under storefront, “Amazon Haul”? The new platform is meant to compete with ultra fast fashion brands like SHEIN and Temu. But as we know, fashion’s overproduction and race to the bottom hurts women of color + the planet the first and worst. Amazon’s workers are already facing extreme working conditions, including lost wages for 10 minutes of idle time, longer work weeks for less pay, and extreme heat conditions. ⚠️🌎 Head to the link below to sign the petition #MakeAmazonPay and take responsibility for the well-being of all of its employees: https://lnkd.in/gKqC_N2A

"In 2021, with the support of the Garment Worker Center and other allies, workers finally won a long fight to establish third-party liability for wage theft in California. The Garment Worker Protection Act closes a key gap that has prevented workers from being able to seek legal accountability for the wrongs they experience due to sub-contracting, a common practice that enables brands to outsource liability throughout their supply chains. The landmark Act establishes a critical protection for garment workers in California who experience wage theft by enabling them to pursue recourse from brands who have outsourced to the companies that workers are employed by" Read more about the Garment Worker Protection Act + other US-based legislation that Remake has been working towards behind the scenes: https://hubs.li/Q02-WXDH0
