Unfortunately, passwordless authentication and passkeys are facing significant obstacles, due to their burdensome rollout and slow adoption by end-users. Full rollout takes 2-3 months if with a passkey integrator, 8-10 months if in-house. Time to full adoption is anyone’s guess. Adoption rates 4 years post deployment vary widely from single digits to ~60% in best case scenarios. If you start now, by 2030 you will still have many users vulnerable to phishing, exposing you to attacks. Cybercriminals maintained access to ByBit for nearly 20 days. No one noticed. Stolen session tokens are becoming the new gold: with one, you can skip MFA, with no hassle. Because MFA can only protect us at login. After the gates are open, there is barely anything. While industry leaders are tirelessly transitioning their users to MFA, hackers already found a way around it. In-session attacks will soon be as prominent as phishing, and there seems to be no effective solution to this emerging threat. What do you think about using your passport to access your online banking? Is that too cumbersome? Or would you be willing it do it every time if it is secure? Personally, I wouldn't mind. Would I be willing to do it at every action I take in the application? No way... This is a very good example of the so called "open door" problem. No matter how secure your initial access, if an online application cannot verify that you are still you at every interaction it will need to implicitly trust an authenticated session token - a simple file, in fact - that lives in your browser. And these session tokens are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals to illegitimately access our accounts and data. These attacks that include session hijacking, token forgery, AitM, etc. are becoming one of the biggest problems that system administrators are facing nowadays.
