Diversity and Accuracy in the Workplace I recently attended a conference on October 8 and 9 at the Marriott Irvine (Octane), where Dr. Sharief Taraman, MD, DABPN, DABPM, FAAP emphasized the critical role of diversity in both the workplace and clinical data. He provided several examples of FDA-approved devices, noting that without diverse clinical data, these devices might not be accurately represented. The FDA is now addressing this issue, especially for pulse oximeters, by requiring calibration and validation submissions that consider darker skin tones. Diversity is essential for success in all areas of life, as it creates a more controlled environment and leads to better outcomes. At Rekovar, a small startup, we are strong advocates for diversity in employment. We integrate diversity and race into our clinical trials to achieve more accurate global interventions. I attended the Octane 2-day Conference on October 8 and 9, where I was particularly interested in the sessions on AI and Innovation. Dr. Anthony Chang, MD, MBA, MPH, MS, the keynote speaker, gave an insightful talk on “mistakes” and career learning. Here are some key takeaways from his speech: Design Thinking ??: Focus on the clinicians’ needs and avoid creating devices they can’t use. Problem Seeking ??: Aim to identify problems rather than just solving them. Timing?: Sometimes, the market isn’t ready for your technology, so patience is crucial. Dr. Chang also emphasized the importance of pivoting quickly and persevering. I truly enjoyed his keynote speech and learned a lot from it. He is an amazing physician and thought leader.
