The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected ReJoule as one of the eight recipients in a transformative initiative under the Biden-Harris Administration's Investing in America agenda! With $6.3 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are advancing EV battery diagnostics technology to improve battery safety and support the circular economy.The goals of this grant are to identify system-level safety hazards and detect defects in used EV batteries at the point of collection—boosting efficiency and paving the way for scalable, sustainable battery reuse. This conference paper details ReJoule’s testing project with the REMADE Institute. I thoroughly enjoyed this year's The Battery Show, the North American battery industry's annual pilgrimage to Michigan. Nothing beats in person interaction. ReJoule engaged with customers at their facilities, as well as with potential partners and investors. I have a stack of business cards to sift through, but before I do that, here are a few of my takeaways from a battery lifecycle management perspective: ● It's a long road to transportation electrification, and things are getting interesting. EVs are still a vital part of automakers plans, but there's a bigger emphasis on cost cutting and operational efficiency. There's a stronger push for safety and reliability. There's also a fresh openness to collaboration because no one company can do it themselves. This past year has been sobering for electrification. Building batteries and the ecosystem around them is hard--but it can be done. ?? ● Localization has been a trend since 2022 when the IRA made domestic manufacturing all but a requirement to compete in North America. But in my conversations throughout the show and the last few months, it's clear that localization isn't just geopolitical. In the future, localization will also be about finding ways to reduce the cost of transportation. One of the biggest drivers of cost in lifecycle management is packaging and shipping a battery. A VP at a major US recycler told me "logistics is the most complicated thing we do". In an industry facing major shakeup, every dime matters, and this battery logistics challenge is measured in billions of dollars. ?? ● The battery end-of-life industry is by no means mature, but it is now less driven by hype. OEMs and even recyclers are starting to shift their thinking away from a straight-to-recycling approach and to a more "highest and best use" approach. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Reuse and repurposing before recycling is the more capital efficient, higher value, and lower emissions path. The winners will do the hard work to build out not only the technology but also an efficient lifecycle conscious supply chain. ? I truly believe ReJoule is better positioned than ever to help build a more circular ecosystem. (Ok, I know I am biased, but it's true! ??) We've not only developed cutting edge rapid diagnostic technology, we've operationalized our HV products in remanufacturing and repurposing environments. And we have plans to continue to broaden our capabilities and impact. It's not too late to build true circularity into the battery supply chain.
