Investigating the opportunities and challenges facing the field of early childhood education today and tomorrow.

关于我们

Project Zero, a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is proud to introduce the Reimagining Early Childhood Education initiative, funded by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative aims to explore the diverse landscapes of early childhood education across various contexts, identifying both emerging opportunities and challenges within the field. Recognizing the need for innovative approaches to early childhood education in our rapidly changing world, Project Zero and ADEK are committed to equipping young learners for future success. Our multi-year research agenda focuses on three key objectives: Global Exploration: We will survey a range of international field sites that exemplify unique curricular models, a commitment to quality teaching and learning, and a holistic approach to child development. Collaborative Inquiry: We will engage a cohort of educators throughout the UAE to collaboratively construct a new framework for early childhood education, tailored to meet the needs of today’s learners. Teacher Training Model: We aim to develop a comprehensive teacher training model that will educate, equip, and certify educators in this innovative framework, ensuring high-quality early childhood education across the region. Join us as we embark on this transformative journey to redefine early childhood education and foster a brighter future for young learners in the UAE and beyond.

  • The Power of Qualitative Research in Shaping Early Childhood Education Policy In her article, "Qualitative Research in Early Childhood Education and Care Implementation," Wendy K. Jarvie challenges the misconception of a divide between quantitative and qualitative research. She argues these methods complement each other, especially in policy-making. Decades of research have shown that early childhood education significantly enhances learning outcomes and shapes adult lives. But what drives these positive changes? Jarvie points out that qualitative research—through interviews, observations, and other approaches—can uncover the nuances of program effectiveness and implementation. The Reimagining Early Childhood Education project, a qualitative research initiative funded by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), intends to take just such an approach. By investing in this project, ADEK is taking a proactive step to gain insights into program and curriculum development for successful implementation. Key areas like program development, teacher training, and parent education benefit from the deep dive offered by qualitative research. Early conversations with Abu Dhabi practitioners have already begun to highlight both opportunities and challenges facing the field of?early childhood education—suggesting new approaches to practice. ADEK's investment in this multi-year collaborative inquiry reflects the support needed to reimagine early childhood education locally and globally. This aligns with Jarvie's vision of essential government investment to drive meaningful change. Embracing qualitative research offers invaluable insights that can inform policy and practice, ultimately enriching early childhood education. #ECE #RECEPZ #ADEK #QulitativeResearch Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education

  • Embracing the Outdoors: Weather is No Obstacle at Guildford Nursery Schools Rain or shine, the outdoors is a vital part of early childhood education at Guildford Nursery Schools in the UK. During our visit on a damp, misty morning, we discovered a lively outdoor scene. Kids and teachers, adorned in rain gear, were joyfully jumping in muddy puddles. Our trip to England marked the first leg of our International Field Study, aimed at observing diverse early childhood education practices worldwide. At Guildford, we saw firsthand how outdoor experiences are woven into the daily routine, regardless of the weather. The school provides rainboots ("Wellies") and waterproof suits in every size to ensure all students—and teachers—can participate in outdoor play. Witnessing so many young people engaging in creative outdoor activities was inspiring. From mixing mud with paint to crafting mud-based pastries and pizzas, the children were fully immersed in their natural surroundings. This hands-on approach not only enhances their learning experience but also fosters an early appreciation for the environment. The premise is simple yet profound: to nurture future stewards of our planet, we must develop their connection to the natural world today. The determination to prioritize outdoor experiences is a common theme we've heard, whether it's dealing with rain, snow, or sun. For some, weather may be seen as an obstacle to engaging kids in the outdoors. But for many others, the old adage “there is no bad weather, just bad gear,” holds true. Beyond having the right gear, many early childhood educators have found innovative ways to connect their students to the natural world. In Abu Dhabi, where the challenge is intense heat, educators also find innovative means to engage children with nature, demonstrating that weather should not be a barrier to outdoor learning. We invite you to reflect on your local weather conditions and how you ensure students access the outdoors. How do you adapt to your environment to provide meaningful outdoor learning experiences—whatever the weather may be? #ECE #OutdoorLearning?#RECEPZ #ADEK Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education

  • Exploring Early Childhood Education in the UAE Jumping into the Reimagining Early Childhood Education project has kept our team busy. At the same time that we have launched our international field study, we have also begun a UAE-based opportunities and needs assessment. As we dive into this work with our colleagues in the UAE, particularly in Abu Dhabi, we're uncovering the unique opportunities and challenges facing the field of early childhood education within this vibrant region. Our team has already visited the UAE three times, engaging with classroom teachers, school leaders, and exploring diverse early learning environments—from local and international schools to creative spaces like museums and art studios. We've gathered rich data and surfaced some emergent themes that will guide the collaborative inquiry experience with our UAE colleagues in the coming years. Stay tuned as we further explore these themes and share our findings. Whether you're in Abu Dhabi, Africa, or Alabama—we welcome your thoughts and connections. Keep an eye out for updates! #ECE?#RECEPZ #ADEK Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education

  • Where Should We Go, Who Should We Talk to, and? What Should We Read? ? Our first move on the Reimagining Early Childhood Education project was to launch an international field study to take the pulse of early childhood education from different global perspectives. In the fall of 2024, we asked the field to recommend sites we should visit around the world, forward thinking field leaders we should talk to, and literature and media we should check out. The field robustly responded. After reviewing the field’s recommendations, where we will go, who we will talk to, and what media and literature we’ll engage with has come into view. We could not be more excited to book our first trips, schedule our first interviews, and engage with materials that we may have overlooked otherwise. We’ll be sure to use this space to share insights from our experiences—as well as some of the puzzles that emerge for us along the way. At the same time, we encourage you to follow us on Instagram @reimaginingearlychildhood?as we explore the opportunities and challenges facing the field of early childhood education today—and tomorrow. #ECE #RECEPZ #ADEK Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education @reimaginingearlychildhood
