What’s suturing like? How do you resuscitate a baby?? ? For 55 area high school students, hands-on activities and an opportunity to talk with healthcare professionals helped to answer their questions while exploring future careers on Thursday.? ? Reid Health’s 2024 Healthcare Career Expo welcomed juniors and seniors from Richmond, Centerville, Hagerstown, and Seton high schools to talk to medical and support staff members from 15 departments. Students also toured the Laboratory, Radiology, Nursing, and Engineering/Powerplant areas.? ? ?? Hands-on activities included:? ?? Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR? ?? IV/Port access with a bed manikin? ?? Skeleton display with a view box with X-ray? ?? Suturing for students to try different stiches? ?? Meeting trained therapy dogs, Hanna and Nala? ?? Tactile table with Moon Sand and Orbeez? ?? A word puzzle? ?? Barium swallow test to try liquids. The procedure is designed to determine whether food or liquid is entering a person's lungs. Indiana University East and Ivy Tech Community College Richmond were also available to answer questions on academic programs for health and industry professions.? ? The event was hosted by Reid Health Human Resources.?

Reid Health’s Community Health team held a Learn Together session with the Circle U Help Center during its weekly meal. Andrew Hoover, CCHW, and Ashley Shepard, CMA, shared education on healthy eating and easy to make recipes, information on mental health resources, and referrals for primary care providers. Participants received a free cooking strainer. During the session, community health workers are available to answer participant’s questions on their health needs and community resources. Learn Together is a free program that can be tailored to an organization’s needs to provide resources and education to the Wayne County community. When David Carrell responds to a call for help, Reid Health staff know just what to expect from him. “He’s the hardest working person I know,” a co-worker said. “He’ll do anything to help anyone, even if it isn’t his job. David does his job with integrity and compassion for the safety of the patients and staff.” Reid Health’s Ambassador for the month of November has been a plumber with the organization’s Engineering Department for the past eight years. If you're considering a career as a paramedic, hear about the profession from members of Reid Health's EMS Training Institute at a special information session on Nov. 6. The institute’s new Paramedic Program will start taking applications in May for the course that begins in Fall 2025, but there are class prerequisites that must be completed by anyone who’d like to join. Sharrie Harlin, Manager of Community Engagement for Reid Health, started Medical Monday when she worked for the Minority Health Coalition and maintained the event after joining Reid. This November, Medical Monday celebrates 15 years as a resource for the community to provide information on health issues, community programs, and preventive screenings. Thriving Thursday was added in Connersville five years ago this month, and both events have loyal followings, averaging 40 to 50 guests each month. Reid Health is proud to partner with Ivy Tech Community College – Richmond as the campus celebrates the completion of the Debra Edelman Healthcare Education Center. The remodeled second floor of Johnson Hall provides a healthcare simulation center to develop the nurses and healthcare providers of the future. For the first time, Reid Health has earned Level 9 recognition in the acute and ambulatory categories of the annual Digital Health Most Wired program from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). The survey and recognition program serves as a “Digital Health Check-up” for healthcare organizations. Participants are graded on a scale of 1-10. According to CHIME, those in Level 9 are often leaders in healthcare technology that push the industry forward, seeing improved quality of care, improved patient experience, reduced costs, and broader patient access to services. “As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the integration of advanced technologies – particularly artificial intelligence – will be a game changer, empowering us to deliver more personalized, efficient, and predictive care,” said Muhammad Siddiqui, Vice President/Chief Information Officer for Reid Health.
