“Employee surveys measure symptoms, not the root causes.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! The Ready’s recent podcast on employee engagement surveys has us thinking a lot about their application in healthcare. TL/DR: These surveys only capture sliver of what's going on, and the responses to them cause a frenzy of smoke-chasing without effecting real change. Bottom line: There are better ways to measure & understand staff wellbeing & the health of an organization. Give it a listen - tell us what you think! https://lnkd.in/gqJqZHVa #employeeengagement #surveys #rootcause #healthcare Sam Spurlin, Rodney Evans, Colin Mulholland

?? “Healthcare systems want the same fixes that they are doling out. They want to take the pill that’s going to fix the problem but they don’t want to change their diet or their lifestyle factors to create meaningful and lasting changes.” ?? Humaniterra’s Heather Buesseler spoke with Denise Wiseman & the Healthcare Reinvention Collaborative about how the root causes of issues need to be addressed to transform healthcare systems. ?? Weigh in: What ideas do you have to move away from the overreliance on “band-aid solutions” towards deep systems change? #Healthcare #SystemsChange #RootCause #Transformation #Solutions

It was a scintillating 2 days participating in Towards an Epidemiology of Compassion, hosted by Focus Area for Compassion and Ethics (FACE)! #Epidemiology is the bedrock science of public health, and #compassion is the central motivating force. This workshop sought to deepen a conversation that began in 2020 about whether we can apply the science of epidemiology to measure compassion in public health programs and services. Here are a few of our takeaways: ?? Epidemiology is designed to help us understand *individual* risk factors, causes, and transmissibility of disease. But so much of our ability to fully express compassion as public health professionals depends on systemic and contextual factors. **How might we measure organizational compassion, or the *flow rate* of compassion in a given system?** ?? Compassion is a humanizing endeavor. In seeking to quantify it through epidemiology, do we risk *dehumanizing* our health programming by translating faces into numbers? Or worse - will it be commodified and gamified for profits? ?? ?? "Compassion is the radicalism of our time." I can't remember who said this, but we couldn't agree more! What do you think? Is developing an "epidemiology of compassion" a worthwhile endeavor? What would you urge us to keep in mind as this nascent discipline emerges?

?? Last week FACE had the joyous opportunity to facilitate a workshop building on our 2020 Epidemiology of Compassion and Love meeting and 2022 in-depth literature review of the subject (https://lnkd.in/eV2iQQ8v). In this workshop, titled *Towards an Epidemiology of Compassion*, we gathered colleagues at The Task Force for Global Health, Inc. and online from around the world ?? to discuss what it would look like to ?? measure and expand compassion at the ?? population level (i.e., apply epidemiologic methods). ?? Stay tuned for our forthcoming worksop report packed with insights and next steps!???? Thank you to all who have already and will soon join this mission to break down barriers to compassion in systems of care! ??

?? Must-Read ?? : We're excited to share a groundbreaking new study that establishes convincing evidence that #compassion is the highest predictor of #healthcarequality ?? ?? ?? Shane Sinclair, Harrison Boss, et al at the University of Calgary recently published their findings in BMC Emergency Medicine. They surveyed over 4,500 patients in emergency departments in Alberta, Canada, which revealed that compassion, beyond all other factors (including clinical communication, pain and symptom management), lies at the heart of quality care and patient experience. Dr. Sinclair declares,?“If we want to improve quality care, compassion is no longer an optional extra, it is paramount. If compassion is an important metric for the quality of one's care, then it must become the organization's priority." We couldn't agree more! ?? ?? ?? Key Takeaways: ? The Sinclair Compassion Questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure to assess patient experiences of compassion -- revealing an important but previously hidden element of quality care ? Compassionate care varied by patient demographics -- women and Indigenous peoples reported lower levels of compassion and lower overall care ratings ? Prioritizing compassion could be a game-changer for improving patient outcomes and population health! Why does this matter? Healthcare isn't serving us well. U.S. population health statistics are declining and health workers have staggering rates of mental health issues. Understanding these research findings can help shape more effective strategies to deliver compassionate health services and design regenerative containers of wellness. ?? Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/gKkWXxWw ?? We’d love to hear your thoughts. How would you use these findings to change your health system? #qualitycare #patientexperience #healthcareinnovation #healthsystemstransformation

"The systems need fixing far more than the people." ?????? It feels like a watershed moment when the Harvard Business Review publishes an article that syncs with the drum beat we've been marching to... We love the idea of designing "Care Operating Systems." Focusing on individual health worker wellbeing is necessary but insufficient. Instead, let's focus on re-engineering the systems so physicians and nurses aren't experiencing alarmingly high rates of mental illness and attrition. Together, let's create generative, well containers that center our humanity and generate true healing and wellness -- both for patients and those providing care. Grateful to IHI's leadership Dr. Kedar Mate, Josh Clark, and Jeff Salvon-Harman, MD, CPE, CPPS for such a clear and compelling argument and real-world examples. https://lnkd.in/e8WhvvqF

#MindfulMondays: Research also shows this is true if you replace "be happy" with "heal"... If you want others to heal, practice #compassion. If you want to heal, practice compassion. This is why, at Humaniterra, we center our efforts on accompanying #publichealth and #healthcare organizations to rewire the fundamental relational aspects of delivering care and health programs -- including helping you amplify the compassion that already exists among your people. How have you seen compassion's healing effects at the individual or organizational levels? We'd love to hear about it in the comments!

#MindfulMondays: Radical systems change is what we need if we want our health systems to actually provide #care or produce #healing. But so often when we talk about our vision for the future, we're met with cynics and naysayers. We are not naive to the entrenched dynamics when it comes to transforming #healthsystems. But we act with the unshakeable belief that *change is possible*. Burnout, cynicism, reactionary, trauma-organized systems keep us immobilized, maintains the status quo, and those profiting from healthcare retain their power. At Humaniterra, we lean into the liberatory practices of radical imagination and systems redesign, centering our most human qualities in our healing systems. If you're curious (or even if you think we're crazy), please reach out -- we'd love to connect.
