A study team including Regenstrief Institute and IU Indianapolis Fairbanks School of Public Health examines how to better identify emergency department patients with health-related social needs. Researchers found that a machine learning model leveraging electronic health record data was more effective than screening surveys at predicting future needs. Emergency department patients were studied because many of these patients are more likely to fall through the cracks due to lack of comprehensive health insurance, transportation barriers, financial insecurity or not having a doctor to address the condition that brought them to seek care. https://lnkd.in/gRGwQctY
