Thank you to Monterey County Weekly's Katie Rodriguez for visiting our facility and writing about recycling and our Materials Recovery Facility in a recent MCW newsletter piece. Katie talked with our Director of Operations, Zo? Shoats: "About two weeks ago I received an excellent refresher on recycling?when I visited ReGen Monterey, our regional waste management district. It has a pretty magnificent facility, managing waste that goes into the landfill, diverted for composting, it has a?pilot biochar program, and yes, a pretty unbelievable recycling facility." "Monterey County is lucky;?lots of other municipalities don’t have facilities like this or the capacity to take the waste they’re receiving. During our tour, I asked if there are any blueprints or examples of waste facilities that ReGen looked to as an example of what it looks like to do things right. They said no;?instead, they feel like they are the blueprint to which other municipalities look toward as an example." ReGen Monterey is proud to be an industry leader in recycling, composting, innovation and environmental protection. We thank our forward-thinking Board of Directors and staff for their guidance and management of this complex system of landfilling, recycling, composting and renewable power generation, along with residents who educate themselves about "what goes where" in their curbside collection program. We get our #MondayMotivation from knowing we have dedicated workers like Javier Ayala, who just celebrated 25 years of service to ReGen Monterey and our community! Javier started as a laborer and now serves as a Sorter II in the Materials Recovery Facility, which processes over 250 tons of recyclables a day. Being a sorter is a demanding and important job. He ensures that contamination is removed so we can deliver quality, pure bales of cardboard, paper, aluminum and plastics #1, 2 and 5 to manufacturers, and so that materials that can tangle equipment are quickly removed at the beginning of the process. Javier was recognized by the ReGen Monterey Board of Directors at our last board meeting, and was joined by his son Javier, who also works at ReGen Monterey with our landfill operations team. Thank you, Javier!

Our #MondayMotivation comes from dedicated and hard-working employees like Chauncey Hendley, who was just honored by the ReGen Monterey Board of Directors for THIRTY YEARS of service to our organization and community. Chauncey is one of our most skilled Heavy Equipment Operators, working on a 300+ acre landfill that can collect 2,500 tons of material a day. He has helped shape this vast facility for decades. Chauncey started as a laborer, but his work ethic, performance and skills had him promoted over the years to our most senior operator. During the meeting, it was stressed how much he has the respect of his colleagues and about his dedication to safety, which has won him a ReGen Safety Champion award. Thank you very much, Chauncey for your service!

#NationalWasteandRecyclingWorkersWeek // Today we are recognizing staff at our Household Hazardous Waste facility. Kirk and Sarai are pictured here collecting paint from residents and ensuring that they are offered for reuse to the public or recycled properly with PaintCare. It's free and easy to turn in leftover paint in a safe and environmentally-friendly way. Drop off unused paint with our HHW team at 14201 Del Monte Blvd., a couple of miles north of Marina. Paint is illegal to dispose of in curbside garbage or recycling carts or down drains because it is made of toxic chemicals, including benzene, formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, mercury and many more. ReGen Monterey offers FREE donated paint. So before you go out and purchase new paint, come see what we have to offer! Our free paint and household product container is located at the Last Chance Mercantile, our reuse store onsite. Together let’s paint a picture of properly disposing of hazardous waste and appreciating the essential workers who get this important work done. Thank you, Kirk, Sarai and HHW team! ??
