JBS, one of the largest meat producers in the world, is now walking back its commitment to cease deforestation. When buying meat, look for farmers who embrace and support wildlife, not displace and destroy it. Now is the time to know your farmer. @redhenapp is about to make it easier than ever to find your farmer. Coming this April.

?? BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! ?? For the past three years, I’ve been working with farmers across the country, and one thing is clear—selling directly to customers is harder than it should be. Finding buyers, managing orders, and keeping up with marketing is exhausting on top of an already challenging job, farming. So, we built something to fix that. Introducing Red Hen—the first app designed to make buying from farmers as easy as grocery shopping. ??? ? Farmers: List your products, set your prices, and let customers find you. ? Cover crop is thriving in our false fall Texas humidity now that we’ve actually had some rain. This is a blend of sunn hemp, oats, sorghum-sudan grass, dwarf rape, sunflower, buckwheat, Japanese millet, and cowpeas.

Hi friends! Here is a follow-up from my last post about perennial cover crops in Florida (the drone video). In this video, I am showing a tree bed that I planted in 2021. At the time of planting, I amended with manure and mulched with wood chips. In 2022, my good friend Joshua Andersen convinced me to plant vetiver in dense hedges along the perimeters of the tree beds, to efficiently build soil organic matter. Fast forward to December 2024, and we have a very thick layer of dark brown, humus-rich soil. For the most part, this bed hasn't had any wood chips or manure/compost applied in two years. Over the last two years, the primary amendment to this bed has been vetiver mulch. I also apply liquid nutrition and biology products from Advancing Eco Agriculture. Vetiver is a very fast-growing, clumping, perennial grass that stalls out around five feet and doesn't take over the farm if it gets overgrown. It is flood and drought resistant, and sterile-seeded. I can get around five good cuts a year from it. Regrowth is still vigorous in the dry season. Vetiver is hardy from zones 8a - 11b. It is an ideal support species for perennial crop systems (citrus particularly) in warm climates such as Florida. This seems to be one of the cheapest, easiest, and fastest ways to build lasting soil fertility ??

Plowed soil vs. no-till, what a difference! ?? When you till the soil, the entire structure is ruined. Soil health depends on billions of little soil creatures. You wouldn't want to put them in a blender, right? At the airport, I accidentally bumped into Luke Wardak, a great soil scientist. ???? He told me about a way of analyzing the soil comparable to a CAT scan. The results are stunning and speak for itself. #regenerative #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #agroecology #regenerativefarming #agroforestry #farming #tuin #tuinarchitectuur #permaculture #voedselbos #nature #climate
