So yesterday Russell Eastaugh and I rattled through 15 key challenges when doing business across Africa. We covered a number of topics including challenges facing specific industries (mining, gambling, airlines, crypto assets), tax issues that arise on specific circumstances (utilising expats, intragroup loans, rationalising dormant companies, managing tax audits), different tax topics (taxes on death, withholding tax on services, even exchange control) and zooming in on key specific country updates (eSwatini, Nigeria, Kenya). We focussed on the African tax quirks that can trip up new entrants, ie what you don't know you don't know about the African tax environment and how education and upfront planning is therefore critical. We'll be sharing the video snippets over the next few weeks, if you'd like the whole loooooong video let us know, thanks Russell Eastaugh, it was fun, if exhausting!

? Spending over 91 days in South Africa annually or accumulating 915+ days over 5 years could make you a tax resident, regardless of your intentions. SARS may tax your global income. Contact Vanessa Turnbull-Kemp today for more information. #TaxCompliance #InternationalTax #SARS

Spending too much time in SA? It could cost you. If you: ? Spend 91+ days in SA per year ? Have clocked 915+ days in total over 5 years ? Own significant assets here SARS might still consider you a tax resident, even if you think you’ve left. That could mean tax on all your global income. Check where you stand before SARS does. Did you know the U.S. Income Tax was born out of booze? ???? Before Prohibition, liquor taxes made up 40% of federal revenue. Caoilfhionn van der Walt Friday fun fact ?? #taxfunfact #incometax
Founder & managing partner at Regan Van Rooy | Passionate about Tax Tech | We solve tax problems for multinational groups | Trained at Andersen and Deloitte, heading a senior team providing real solutions in real time.
Did you know? The U.S. Income Tax exists because of… booze! ???? Before Prohibition, the U.S. government relied heavily on alcohol taxes, up to 40% of federal revenue came from taxing liquor! ???? Then came the temperance movement, leading to the 16th Amendment in 1913, which introduced the federal income tax to replace lost alcohol revenue. When Prohibition kicked in (1920-1933), the government realised that banning booze was not just unpopular, it was financially disastrous! So, when Prohibition was revoked in 1933, alcohol taxes returned, but the income tax stayed for good! Next time you file your tax return, raise a glass to history! ???? #FridayFunTaxFact #Prohibition #IncomeTax
