Bodegas Bhilar is a boutique winery located in Elvillar, Rioja Alavesa, owned and operated by husband-and-wife team, David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman. Their goal is to make terroir-driven wines with soul, respect the land, work only with indigenous grapes, and to share their unique wines with good people with positive energy. ? Their vineyards are spread across 17 Ha of diverse plots in Elvillar and Kripan.?Graciano, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura, and Malvasia vines thrive among peach, cherry, and olive trees, wild herbs and flowers, lending to a vibrant and diverse ecosystem. They called her crazy, even reckless, when she converted her family vineyards to organic viticulture in the early 80’s (then to Biodynamics, then Fukuoka Method) and just a decade later she was teaching some of the greats how to do the same. Now she continues to guide the appellation as one of the chairs of the Albeisa Consorzio, the main governing body of the Langhe. I’ve had the pleasure of walking the vineyards with Marina, which are as untamed as the winemaker herself. I’ve tasted her beautiful wines in her new tasting room overlooking the picturesque town of Neive. Elia’s family has lived in Montalcino for generations, but he is the first to bottle and sell wines. He has several vineyards on his property where the soil is galestro with large stones. He uses only Slovenian oak and ages his wines longer than the regional requirements.
