45 years ago, President Jimmy Carter signed the bipartisan Refugee Act into law — a landmark piece of legislation committing our nation to welcoming those in need, providing a vital pathway to safety for the world’s most vulnerable. Now this legacy of welcome is at risk, with the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program halted and critical funding frozen. Take action on this anniversary by reminding your Members of Congress that the Refugee Act remains the law of the land and urge them to protect and support refugee resettlement and asylum access: https://bit.ly/4iLROiU #refugeeswelcomehere #RefugeeAct
关于我们
Creating opportunity for refugees fleeing war, terror, and persecution to build new lives of safety, dignity, and self-reliance. Every year, RefugeeOne serves more than 3,000 refugees and immigrants of all ages, ethnic groups, faiths, and backgrounds. Our primary focus is to assist these resilient individuals in becoming independent community members. As the largest resettlement agency in Chicago, RefugeeOne has welcomed more than 20,500 refugees through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program since 1982. RefugeeOne walks alongside refugees from the moment they land at O'Hare International Airport — welcoming them to the city and providing furnished apartments, English classes, job search support, mental health care, youth programming, volunteer mentors, and more to help them adjust to life in the U.S.

Right now families are torn apart because of the administration's refugee ban. To see his wife and 5 children, Abdalla had to ask them to send a picture. Abdalla, a refugee from Somalia, was welcomed to the U.S. in 2023. His family is stuck in South Africa — now with no reunion in sight, since the Trump administration stopped new refugee arrivals. “I wish they could know this is affecting my family. I’m in America, but part of me is still outside.” Abdalla hears similar stories from newly arrived refugees he works with at RefugeeOne. “We came here to function in a safe place where we can send our kids to school," he says. "We just want to live like other humans. We need a place to call home.” ?? Please contact your members of Congress to urge them to stand with refugees. #refugeeswelcome

We're grateful to have Congressman Mike Quigley in our corner, supporting the mission to welcome newcomers to Chicago! He heard directly from refugees about their difficult journeys to the U.S. and fears for family and friends still waiting to reach safety. Thank you Congressman, for committing to push for the restoration of the refugee resettlement program + critical funding! #RefugeeResettlement #refugeeswelcomehere #newcomerswelcome #defendrefuge

A HUGE thank you to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky who pledges to fight for our ongoing work to resettle refugees in Chicago. We’re honored she took time to meet with RefugeeOne and hear emotional stories from refugees who are currently separated from their families, amid the chaos and uncertainty following the refugee admissions halt and funding freeze. ? We applaud Congresswoman Schakowsky’s efforts to be a champion for refugees and see families reunited! #refugeeswelcomehere #RefugeeResettlement #Welcome #newcomerswelcome Church World Service

We were thrilled to host our first monthly “Parent Workshop” earlier this month! Nine parents attended the School Engagement presentation led by our Youth Education Coordinator Hannah Kaplan. They left with valuable resources to improve communication with their children's schools. This program empowers parents to navigate the U.S. school system, communicate effectively with school administrators, and acclimate to new changes. We look forward to many more successful workshops ahead!

Nekbahkt lost most of her family in a deadly bombing in Afghanistan. Then when the Taliban took over in 2021, she was separated from her husband and evacuated to the U.S. ? With the help of RefugeeOne, she has built a new life in Chicago, including housing, updated prosthetics, and community support. Now, we're working to help get her reunited with her husband. ? Check the Borderless Magazine link below for a more in-depth look at her story. We are honored to be a part of her rebuilding. https://lnkd.in/g7Td6Dbm Photo Credit Mustafa Hussain for Borderless Magazine
