With our Karachi-based partner Joint Action Committee for Refugees (JAC-R Samar Abbas ??? ???? Moniza Kakar) we submitted an alternative report to the UN Human Rights Committee for the 142nd Session in which they considered the State report for Pakistan. This is a review that takes place every few years and assesses governments' compliance with their obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, one of the core international human rights instruments. Our report can be found among the "Info from Civil Society Organizations (for LOIs)" at the link below. We were pleased that the Human Rights Committee in its Concluding report, paragraphs 36-37, echoed our report and emphasized the need for Pakistan to take measures to establish an asylum system, in line with our recommendations. https://lnkd.in/d6bz_E2q #Advocacy #Monitoring #civil-society #humanrights #pakistan #refugees

We are very happy to be working with an amazing team at Climate REACH on research related to climate displacement in Pakistan. Stay tuned for more as we seek to understand the legal protection and other implications of this phenomenon.
Climate Displacement is a lingering effect of either extreme weather events or the slow insidious yet wider shifts felt due to climate change. We, alongwith our partner organization Refugee Solidarity Network , are conducting a short fact finding research on how communities are dealing with climate change induced migration, displacement, transition, resettlement, or even returning back to where home used to be. This Focus Group Discussion was conducting with a community which has settled in a remote area on the border of Hub/Karachi Balochistan/Sindh. They have now named this newly developed village is called 'Mehran Goth'. We will be going to other communities soon as well with our team including Qurat Mirza, Ali Hassan Leghari, and Ahmad Shabbar. ?? RSN has for many years worked on access to legal information ? for asylum-seekers and rights advocates. Recently, our Kevin Cole has led innovative research on #AI and how it can potentially improve efforts to make information available, accessible, and reliable for the various stakeholders that need it. The research is based on work we have done with partner Refugee Rights Turkey and made possible with the support of the U.S. Department of State and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The findings are instructive, providing important cautionary take-aways and revealing areas for further development and potential. We are excited to share the report and see this as a continuation of our previous work and indicative of our future direction: always bringing fresh ideas to bear on the fundamentals of legal protection for displaced persons.
Over the past months, I've had the opportunity to get some hands-on experience with the potentials and current limits of LLM technologies while building a proof-of-concept chatbot designed to provide information on asylum procedures in Turkey in multiple languages thanks to a grant from AWS's Disaster Response Team to Refugee Solidarity Network. More importantly, I think, working on this project has provided a space for broader reflection on the Humanitarian Sector and where/how innovative technologies can be both harmful and helpful, and what humanitarian organizations can do to mitigate these risks. I'm happy to share some of these reflections in a new report, "Navigating Humanitarian AI": https://lnkd.in/eUemDpgp I've also written a shorter blogpost which gets into a bit more technical detail regarding some of the challenges that working with LLMs can pose, especially in less-represented languages and in sensitive settings. There, you can view some of the preliminary results our proof-of-concept was able to produce with an interactive exploration tool: https://lnkd.in/eEwrNrGk I'm looking forward to continuing conversations on #HumanitarianAI and responsible adoption strategies with other colleagues in the field! #AccessToInformation #ArtificialIntelligence #LLMs

Thanks to all involved at the Baker Center for organizing an insightful conversation with our Executive Director and for capturing its essence in this policy brief.
Turkey currently hosts nearly 4million refugees — predominantly Syrians who have fled their country’s civil war. Ensuring adequate legal protection for those seeking asylum and improving the capacity of Turkish institutions and civil society organizations to serve those in need is vital. Based on a conversation with Refugee Solidarity Network founder and director Zaid Hydari, fellow Kelsey Norman, research manager Ana Martín Gil, and student interns Beyza Yildirim and Imogen Brown explain how domestic and international bodies can support the many refugees in Turkey. On January 31st, join GCIR and our partners at Refugee Congress, Refugee Solidarity Network, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) at UC College of the Law, San Francisco and RISE Together Fund at Proteus Fund for a discussion on forced #displacement. Through this #webinar, funders will come to better understand the global forces and systems that lead to forced displacement, and how #philanthropy can support leaders who are providing frontline responses.
