One of the biggest obstacles in the current ILA & USMX negotiations concerns just how poorly U.S. ports perform on an efficiency basis. As evidence, below I've copied data from a report from The World Bank and S&P Global (https://lnkd.in/gUt_kAxT) for 2023 rankings for the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). The table below reports the North American ports. Thoughts: ?Charleston is the best performing container ports involved in the current strike, and it ranks 60th globally. Savannah is the worst performer of the affected ports at 398 globally. ?This inefficiency matters because carriers don't, by and large, collect terminal handling charges for imports to the USA. To quote from Peter Tirschwell's insightful article at JOC (https://lnkd.in/gubmPApQ), "Due to longstanding business practices, however, THCs are not collected in the US outside of a few specific trade lanes such as Australia/New Zealand to Philadelphia. As a result, any wage increase maritime employers agree to in contract negotiations will come directly out of the carriers’ pockets." ?Consequently, the more USMX caves to the ILA's wage requests, the more it directly costs the carriers. Implication: continued inefficiency of U.S. ports, on all coasts, will continue to pose challenges with union labor contracts. While trying to avoid taking a normative stance on union opposition to automation, I will say that every other industry in the USA (academia included) has to embrace technology or risks going obsolete. From a professional pride standpoint, are we satisfied that our ports are so less efficient than those in Asia or Europe? #supplychain #shipsandshipping #markets #freight #transportation

Supply chain professor helping industry professionals better use data

To assuage concerns about U.S. food supply chain with the impending East & Gulf Coast container port strike, I wanted to share the rare evening post documenting that the vast majority of foods and beverages consumed in the United States are manufactured in the USA. The table below shows the percent of imports relative to total product supply (domestic production + imports) based on the Bureau of Economic Analysis' detail-level Supply Table (https://lnkd.in/eQdPji9) from the Input-Output Accounts. Sectors are rank-ordered from most to least import intensive. Thoughts: ?Most affected is fruit & nut trees, which maps well to the massive amounts of bananas that we import (in addition to many other products of this type). ?We see distilleries and wine are ~30% imported, with the majority of containerized imports coming from Europe (meaning there is no chance for diverting that freight to the West Coast). ?Otherwise, there isn't much for concern. Meats, eggs, poultry, breakfast cereals, bread, and especially dairy products that we consume are produced almost entirely here. Implication: even if we were to see a very extended East & Gulf Coast port strike, there won't be widespread shortages of foods and beverages. Yes, imported fruits and alcohol could become more challenging to find, but there is no concern about running out of meat, milk, bread, or other food staples. I'll share more data tomorrow about which specific containerized import categories are the most affected by the strike. #markets #supplychain #shipsandshipping #freight #economics
