    On a recent episode of The All In Podcast, one of the hosts recently predicted that vertical software companies would be the worst-performing asset of 2024. The rationale was that AI has enabled companies to build, with no-to-low code, their own internal software solutions at a much lower cost than the price of purchasing comparable software from a 3rd-party. Reformation is firmly on the opposite end of this “short" and we explain our rationale in this post.

    This past week’s All-In Podcast shared the hosts' annual predictions on a number of business topics, including the worst asset of 2024. One response to this specific category was that vertical software companies will be the worst-performing asset in 2024. The rationale was that AI has enabled companies to build, with no-to-low code, their own internal software solutions at a much lower cost than the price of purchasing comparable software from a 3rd-party. As a result of this new ability to build internal tools more seamlessly, the argument goes, there will be increased churn and pricing compression resulting in deflationary SaaS pricing power. While I believe this argument/opinion has merit, I am firmly on the opposite end of this “short" and explain my rationale in this post as to why AI is Not the Death of Vertical SaaS. (Thank you to Joshua Tilton, CFA, who leads much of the vertical software coverage at Wolfe Research, LLC, for sharing some thoughts that I've included.)

    "What is Ideal Buyer Persona (IBP)? If ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) is focused on company-level characteristics, then IBP is focused on purchaser-level characteristics: it’s a grounded-in-reality representation of your ideal customer within your ICP based on market research, customer (and prospective customer) feedback, and sales funnel + product engagement data. The IBP is not only a “who”, but also a “why” and a “how”: who is buying your product within an organization, why are they buying your solution, and how are they using your product internally (or, in some cases, externally). Knowing and articulating each of these IBP elements, alongside defining your ICP, provides a much more granular understanding of your customer and will be of significant value to your business."

    Many SaaS startups are well aware of their ICP, however there should now be an increased focus on your "IBP": Ideal Buyer Person. Whereas ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) tends to be focused on company-level characteristics (e.g. “senior care facilities”, or “luxury retail brands with 10–50 physical locations”), IBP is focused on purchaser-level characteristics. Specifically, understanding your IBP is not just a “who”, but also a “why” and a “how”: who is buying your product within an organization, why are they buying your solution, and how are they using your product internally. Knowing and articulating each of these IBP elements, alongside defining your ICP, provides a much more granular understanding of your customer and will be of significant value to your business as you seek to establish strong product-market fit that is a prerequisite for building an exceptional SaaS business at scale.
