On October 8th, we gathered to celebrate the 6th Cohort of Green and Healthy Schoolyard Redevelopment Projects completed at five Milwaukee Public Schools! Holistic redevelopment projects at Forest Home Avenue School, Greenfield Bilingual, Lincoln Avenue MPS, Milwaukee Sign Language School & Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented and Story Elementary have transformed their asphalt schoolyards into vibrant green spaces that provide engaging learning and play spaces, manage and capture stormwater, promote urban biodiversity, and enrich our communities. Together, the five school projects -- * removed 278,000+ square feet of asphalt replaced with publicly accessible greenspace * planted 517 trees helping to provide shade that reduces heat stresses * installed 100,000+ square feet of native habitat restored via bioswales and prairies providing habitat for wildlife, improving pollinator populations, and supporting educational opportunities for students and community members The projects collectively manage 1.3 million gallons of stormwater through green infrastructure every time it rains, helping to reduce combined sewer overflows and basement flooding while improving urban biodiversity. These projects are possible thanks to many project supporters, engineers, and contractors bringing them to life. Thank you for supporting greener, healthier schools! With another spring snowstorm predicted for #Wisconsin today, it seems like a good time to talk about salt -- sodium chloride, to be scientific -- and how it's affecting our #freshwater. This article in Urban Milwaukee, Inc. describes the rising salinity in #LakeMichigan and its tributaries and efforts from groups such as Milwaukee Riverkeeper and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission to monitor it. “Ultimately, science can be slow to catch up with environmental change or issues like salt pollution,” said Dr. William Hintz of the University of Toledo. “We certainly need to understand how salt pollution affects a greater diversity of freshwater species and ecosystem processes, but the available evidence suggests we should act sooner rather than later.” #GreatLakes #WaterStewardship Reflo, Inc.

Yesterday I had an opportunity to tune into the The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin's annual State of the?Conservancy?webinar to hear about its incredible work in 2023. I was so impressed with the cool things that Reflo, Inc. is doing to transform asphalt playgrounds in Milwaukee into environmentally-friendly outdoor classrooms, forests, and nature play areas! Check out this before and after of one of their schoolyard redevelopment projects that Justin Hegarty talked about. Congrats to TNC's Cate Harrington on your retirement! And a heartfelt thank you for introducing me to the wonderful work of this organization as a volunteer photographer years ago. :)
