高等教育
The REEL Policy Clinic at Georgetown Law engages in policy advocacy to advance racial equity in public education.
关于我们
Students in the Racial Equity in Education Law & Policy Clinic ("REEL Policy Clinic") engage in legislative advocacy around a variety of issues relating to racial inequity in education, including discriminatory school discipline practices, school resource disparities, and school segregation, among others. Clinic students work in teams of 2 or 3 on client work projects. Projects may include drafting and/or delivering public testimony, writing white papers or talking points, drafting public comment letters in response to proposed rulemaking, researching legal issues, drafting proposed legislative language, analyzing the impact of policy proposals, and participating in coalitions.

The Racial Equity in Education Law & Policy Clinic Clinic Director Janel George joined the The African American Policy Forum for a conversation about attacks on Black women and the urgency for understanding these attacks through an intersectional lens as part of a larger project to undermine racial progress.
It was such a pleasure to join with some sheroes in the academy and beyond who are working to advance racial justice for the The African American Policy Forum's event Monday in the Vineyard addressing attacks on Black women with Kimberle Crenshaw, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Karen Attiah, and Evelynn Hammonds. Please join Racial Equity in Education Law & Policy Clinic Director Janel George for the The African American Policy Forum's Critical Race Theory Summer School There’s still time to sign up for Critical Race Theory Summer School Don’t miss out! We’re 24 hours out, but there’s still time to?sign up and virtually attend?the 5th Annual Critical Race Theory Summer School. As a special incentive for the next 48 hours, registration will be 50% off.? In just the last week, the importance of developing a deep understanding of systemic racism has become ever-more apparent. Consider: Sonya Massey, a 36-year old Black woman was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy outside Springfield, Illinois.?This, despite posing no threat to the officer, and having raised her hands in fear when the officer pointed his gun at her and threatened to “shoot her in the face.” In the wake of Kamala Harris securing enough delegates to become the Democratic presidential nominee, right-wing commentators have been attacking her as a DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) candidate. They insist she was only chosen for the 2020 ticket because of her identity as a woman of color. This smear is par for the course lately, with “DEI” having become the latest version of a racial slur for some. But to understand why these things keep happening – why Black women continue to face such disproportionate (but often unnamed) police violence and why successful folks of color face such constant scrutiny of their qualifications – critical race theory is indispensable. And CRT Summer School can help! In light of recent events, here are some important highlights from our agenda! Attorney Benjamin Crump?will be joining us for our homeroom session, Tuesday morning, to discuss the murder of Sonya Massey. Joining Tim Wise in the?DEI Intensive, will be special guests?Amalea Smirniotopoulos and Michaele Turnage Young, from NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Equal Protection Initiative, Olivia Sedwick, from the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and Tanya Katerí?Hernández, from Fordham University School of Law. Nine hours of CLE credit?are available this year! CRT Summer School?is for all who care about the fight for racial justice, the freedom to learn, LGBTQ+ rights, public education, diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiracial democracy. It’s a place where students, parents, teachers, artists, activists, and people of all backgrounds can learn from one another to revive the spirit of 1964’s Freedom Summer. #racialjustice #crt We are coming together to say:?No U-Turn On Racial Justice!

Segregation is not inevitable--Brown's Promise outlines state strategies to foster high-quality and diverse education opportunities
Fifty years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Milliken v. Bradley allowed families to evade school integration by fleeing to surrounding suburbs and drawing district boundary lines in discriminatory ways. Brown's Promise explores this pivotal ruling that struck a powerful blow against Brown and outlines state strategies to continue to advance integration and access to quality education for all children Racial Equity in Education Law & Policy Clinic https://lnkd.in/d7nEZNqE

Upon emancipation, one of the first things that many Black Americans sought was education. Formerly enslaved Black lawmakers led the charge during Reconstruction to help craft the nation's contemporary public education system and to craft education provisions in state constitutions.
