The RLE is a globally standardized framework for assessing ecosystem health and identifying ecosystems at risk of collapse.?CORDIO East Africa’s implementation of the #RLE in the Western Indian Ocean #WIO will be presented as a case study, demonstrating how this framework can be applied to coral reef regions worldwide. Speakers will also introduce the tools and resources developed through the Global Coral Biodiversity Assessment Project, including data-sharing standards, an online code repository, and assessment templates. Together, these resources support a foundation for consistent, data-driven #coral conservation across GCRMN regions. Speakers include: ?? Marcos Valderrabano, IUCN ?? Emily Nicholson, Co-lead of IUCN CEM RLE Thematic Group / University of Melbourne ??Mishal Gudka, CORDIO East Africa / University of Melbourne ??David Obura, CORDIO East Africa ??Franzinho Smith, Technical Consultant ??Marina Anselme, PhD., MSC Foundation

The Reef Resilience Network connects marine managers and practitioners with peers, tools, knowledge, and global experts to learn and apply solutions for improved management, protection, and restoration of coral reefs around the world. To achieve this, we: ? Synthesize and share the latest science and management strategies to keep busy managers in-the-know ? Connect managers and experts to share resources and lessons learned, and inspire greater collaboration ? Provide training, technical assistance, and seed funding to catalyze action on the ground and in the water and support countries to achieve their 30 x 30 marine protection goals

For small island ocean states like The Bahamas with vast areas of ocean space, effective management and enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) are crucial for both people and nature. More than 17% of The Bahamas’ nearshore environment is protected through one of the largest networks of MPAs in the Caribbean, spanning nearly 6.8 million hectares (16.8 million acres). In order to support these thriving ecosystems that provide critical habitats for diverse species, protect coasts from storms and sustain local livelihoods, it’s not enough to draw lines on a map and walk away. The implementation of long-term, effective marine protection is critical. Enter the Nature Bonds Program: an innovative program that combines debt refinancing, science, planning and policy to help countries protect ecosystems and support communities. In The Bahamas, the latest Nature Bonds project (The Bahamas Debt Conversion Project for Marine Conservation) will unlock USD 124 million of new cash funding (plus an additional estimated USD 8 million of endowment investment returns) for conservation over the next 15 years. A significant portion of these much-needed funds will go toward capacity building, technical support and other essential activities to improve management of The Bahamas’ vast protected area systems. ?????? ???????? ??????????! The Bahamas Exclusive Economic Zone #EEZ is the largest in the Caribbean, containing over 242,000 square miles of protected ocean and islands, which presents a huge challenge for enforcement. Currently, nearly one-third of all fishing catch in The Bahamas is considered illegal, unreported, and unregulated #IUU fishing. To address the challenge of monitoring, control, surveillance, and enforcement within The Bahamas’ maritime domain, Bahamian government agencies partnered with WildAid and The Nature Conservancy in 2018 to form the Marine Action Partnership (MAP) for Sustainable Fisheries.
