? Revealing Beauty Through Light: Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis Receives IALD Award! ?? RBLD is proud to share that our lighting design for the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, home to the largest collection of mosaic tiles in the Western world, has received an IALD Award of Merit! This project has been a journey of discovery, restoring unseen beauty and creating much-needed functional illumination within this century-old masterpiece. To bring our “Celestial Mosaic” lighting vision to life, we conducted technical surveys during varied events and times of day, studying the Basilica’s colors, reflectances and viewpoints. Through early engagement, we crafted renderings and design boards to aid fundraising, ensuring this vision had robust community support. Introducing light sources from multiple angles allowed us to enhance the depth and texture of both polished and matte tiles, while precise illumination of marble statues draws visitors’ eyes to elements that reveal the Cathedral’s story and rich history. Key features like a custom armature assembly at the apex of the dome and carefully placed luminaires make millions of mosaic tiles visible in extraordinary color and detail. The new lighting in seating areas increased levels by nearly 300%, all while reducing energy consumption by 80%. The Cathedral Basilica now stands as an illuminated testament to its artistic and architectural heritage, offering parishioners and visitors an inspiring space that harmonizes beauty with functionality. Congratulations to designers Randy Burkett, FIALD, FIES, LC, Susan Jennings, Associate IALD, Carly Hofstetter, Steve Rohde, Ron Kurtz, IALD, LEED AP, MIES(formerly of RBLD)! #Lighting #LightingDesign #LightingDesigners #IALD #IALDAwards #RBLD #CelestialMosaic #HistoricRestoration #StLouis #ArchitecturalLighting #CathedralBasilica #ByzantineArchitecture #MosaicIllumination
