We had three great days in Helsinki at the M18 consortium meeting of the REDYSIGN Project. A big thanks to Alvaro Tejado (Tecnalia) for the excellent coordination of this exciting and promising project, and to the VTT team and Heli Kangas (Valmet) for hosting us with great hospitality. ??#REDYSIGN Consortium Meeting in Helsinki! On March 18th and 19th, the #REDYSIGN consortium gathered at VTT's facilities for the first Consortium Meeting of the year. Two days filled with collaboration, insightful discussions, and planning for the road ahead! ?? Day 1 focused on project management and technical work packages. ?? Day 2 brought updates on the progress of the environmental, economic, and social assessment from a life cycle perspective, as well as communication and dissemination actions, plus an exploitation workshop. A highlight of the meeting was our visit to VTT’s cutting-edge facilities, guided by our fantastic hosts. And, of course, some partners fully embraced the Finnish experience with a sauna and ice swimming session, enjoying breathtaking sunset views! ?? ?? Now, we set our sights on a key milestone: our first review meeting, where we will showcase #REDYSIGN’s innovations and progress. ?? This week's highlight: Redesigning Packaging, Rethinking Impact: Integrating Safe and Sustainable by Design. ? We’re pleased to present an insightful article from our HOLOSS team members, Ana E., António Nogueira and Dr. Tamilazhaki Lingasamy. They explore how incorporating Safe and Sustainable by Design (#SSbD) principles can significantly improve food packaging. ? ?? What does this mean for application? By reducing harmful chemicals and implementing design strategies that promote clean material cycles while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions (#GHG), we can effectively mitigate risks in product development. ? ?? How is this being applied in #REDYSIGN? #HOLOSS integrates the SSbD framework early in the development process to support #REDYSIGN’s innovative packaging solutions. The sustainability of project products is evaluated using the “triple bottom line” model: ? ?? Economic Sustainability: Assessed through Life Cycle Costing (LCC) to confirm viability. ?? Social and sociological aspects: Evaluated using Social Life Cycle Assessment (s-LCA) to gauge effects on society. ?? What other actions is the RISE PFI team working hard on? RISE PFI (Gary Chinga Carrasco & Eva Pasquier) has been focusing on several key areas of the REDYSIGN Project. Here are some highlights: ? ?? Raw materials for the project have been produced, characterized, and provided to the partners for further use. ?? Together with our industrial partners in #REDYSIGN, fibrillation of enzymatic-pretreated fibres has been addressed, with promising first results now in hand. ?? Pulp fibres derivatives have been produced and will be further tested for use in products. ?? The products under development at RISE PFI include the tray and absorbing pads. ?? A new tray design is under evaluation, to be produced by thermoforming. ? Our colleagues at RISE PFI (Gary Chinga Carrasco and Eva Pasquier) have made significant strides in #REDYSIGN over the past months, particularly in designing sustainable wood fibre-based tray solutions for fresh meat and guided by Safe and Sustainability by Design (#SSbD) strategies. These principles are essential for assessing the potential environmental impacts of the products being developed. ? Key developments include: ? ?? Wood pulp fibers have been extensively characterized for use in thermoformed food packaging, providing valuable insights into their sustainability and suitability for this application. ?? A process for producing trays through thermoforming has been successfully demonstrated, supporting the development of sustainable packaging solutions. ??
