EPISODE ALERT: #80 with Clifford Stott, a distinguished social psychologist specializing in crowd behavior, group identity, and public order policing. Cliff discusses his background and early life experiences, and how this led him to study crowd psychology and develop the #Elaborated_Social_Identity Model as an alternative to outdated mob psychology theories. Stott's work aims to debunk the myth that crowds inherently lose control and become irrational, arguing instead that crowd behavior is guided by shared social identities and norms.? If you are preparing for #FIFA2026 then this is absolutely the episode for you. Apple: https://apple.co/41wPdDA? Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3QXwmvr Soundcloud: https://lnkd.in/ebcuxGQA

If you've read 'Reducing Crime: A Companion for Police Leaders', did you know there is a short online training course that covers the key parts of the book, and more? As an Inspector for a major police department wrote: "I really enjoyed the course. I found the checklists really helpful and can see how they could apply to a number of different policing problems. I think going through the PANDA model systematically could help anyone dealing with problems." The online course is a low-cost, easily accessible way to get your leadership team up to speed on problem-oriented policing and introduced to evidence-based policing. The new online short course ‘Reducing Crime with the PANDA model’ is now available. ? This ONLINE course is an overview of the 3-day Police Commander's Crime Reduction course, featuring the PANDA model. It supports and follows the book "Reducing Crime: A Companion for Police Leaders" and the three-day Police Commander's Crime Reduction course delivered in person by Dr Jerry Ratcliffe that you attended. This new online course gives participants an overview of the main program components and a better understanding of the PANDA model and how it can aid police leaders. The course comprises easy stages modeled on the book that can be completed in about 3-4 hours or dipped into repeatedly at leisure over the course of up to a year. The course cuts to the chase, with short readings and videos designed for busy police leaders to cover the key aspects of the PANDA model at a pace that works for anyone. It is also a useful source for crime and intelligence analysts. ? After completion of this course, participants will be more familiar with the different parts of the PANDA model, as well as more versed in crime prevention generally. And they will be able to implement the PANDA model in your organization. ? As a Deputy Chief of Operations wrote, “It hits the spot perfectly. This course offers an in-depth approach to tackling crime and disorder using proven research techniques to better equip officers and supervisors for addressing these issues. Not enough of this in mainstream law enforcement.” ? An Inspector from a major city police department wrote, “I really enjoyed the course. I found the checklists really helpful and can see how they could apply to a number of different policing problems. I also think the checklists could be used for different ranks not just those in higher ranks.” ? At US$249 it is an easy and accessible introduction to the PANDA model, and the ideas in the book 'Reducing Crime: A Companion for Police Leaders'. The course is only available to law enforcement personnel, and requests to take the course can be accessed at the link below. ? https://bit.ly/3W4PxFy

EPISODE ALERT: #76 out now with Dr Thaddeus Johnson a senior fellow with the Council on Criminal Justice and an assistant professor with the Georgia State University - Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. He chats about his experiences as a Black police officer and his transition to academia. Johnson and his colleagues conducted a study examining the effects of police unionization and collective bargaining on police use of force. They found that increased police pay was associated with reduced police killings overall, but this benefit was only seen in non-unionized departments and not for Black citizens in unionized departments. It's quite fascinating. Apple: https://lnkd.in/e96CtA9P Spotify: https://lnkd.in/e96CtA9P SoundCloud: https://lnkd.in/eCh_R2MS

EPISODE ALERT: #75 out now with Dr Ian T. Adams, Ph.D. In this highly colorful (language-wise) episode of the podcast, Dr Ian Adams, talks about his former policing career, his move to academia, and his recent policy related paper "Fuck: The Police" (https://lnkd.in/es-fNfHb). In this work, he explores the range of ways that police officers use the word, and it's many variations, and how or even if, police departments should regulate the use of profanity in officers' behavior.? It is a fun episode, but the language throughout is highly colorful, and you probably shouldn't listen with kids in the car.???
