RED SNEAKERS PEORIA TEAMS WITH UPC Discovery TO LAUNCH “ALLERGY
FRIENDLY Early Learning Center”
Red Sneakers for Food Allergy Awareness - Peoria Chapter is donating epinephrine injectors, Food Allergy training/CPR training and more to make UPC Discovery the first allergy friendly early learning center in the area.
Peoria Heights, IL – August 26th, 2024 - Red Sneakers Peoria has partnered with UPC Discovery in Peoria, IL to become the First Allergy Friendly Early Learning Center in the area. They will be the first early learning center in the area to have undesignated epinephrine. Epinephrine is the only medication to help reverse a severe allergic reaction. Red Sneakers Peoria has partnered with Kaléo - Auvi-Q the epinephrine injector that talks to you while using the medication, to donate the epinephrine injectors. UPC Discovery will be receiving a food allergy certificate of completion from FARE - FARECheck as well as CPR certified by the American Heart Association. The education, training, certifications and medications will be donated by Red Sneakers Peoria
1 in 13 children have a life-threatening food allergy and over 60 percent of food allergy reactions at school take place in preschools and child care facilities. Due to epinephrine costs and or lack of education, many parents do not carry epinephrine for their child or provide their early learning center with the life-saving medication. Under Illinois Epinephrine Injector Act/and Public Act 100-0726, early learning centers are able to be epinephrine injector equipped by following guidelines. Red Sneakers Peoria is providing a comprehensive solution to meet those requirements.
Illinois’ Elijah’s Law HB0102 On August 20, 2021, the Childhood Anaphylactic Policy Act, also known as Elijah’s Law, was signed into law in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Public Health, in consult with the State Board of Education and the Department of Children and Family Services,
is to establish anaphylaxis policies for school districts and child care facilities. The Act contains the specific requirements, guidelines, policies, and protocols for schools. Child care facilities are required to develop a plan for anaphylaxis and have at least one staff member who is trained on
anaphylaxis present at all times. Unfortunately, this law has not been implemented and enforced making our early learning centers/daycares a possible risk for our children.
Later this year, the Peoria Chapter is hosting their Second Annual 5K Walk/Run for Food Allergy Awareness and Teal Pumpkin Fall Festival on October 12, 2024, in Peoria Heights, Illinois.
