Way back in 1819 a group of men in the 6th Ward of New Orleans created a unique Mardi Gras tradition and called themselves the Skeleton Krewe. They dressed in homemade skeleton costumes early on Mardi Gras morning, waking residents to prepare for the festivities of the day. “What we do is in the real spirit of Mardi Gras, we think; a sort of shedding of the flesh,” their chief, Bruce ‘Sunpie’ Barnes explains, adding that it is one way “people give honor to the family spirits that went before them.” They wear aprons with skull and bone emblems and the phrase “You next” as a reminder to revelers of the impermanence of life and to warn them away from negative choices that bring death closer.

The Krewe of Thoth first entered the Carnival picture in 1947 with 50 members and five floats. The group of men who founded the Thoth created a unique uptown neighborhood route designed to pass in front of 14 institutions that care for persons with disabilities and illnesses and were not able to attend other parades in the City.

The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus is a Mardi Gras parade organization for the most revelrous of Star Wars freaks, Trekkies, Whovians, mega-geeks, circuit benders, cryptozooligists, UFO conspiracy theorists, mad scientists, and members all other nerdoms. Zulu throws coconuts, Muses throws shoes, the Krewe of Chewbacchus throws incredible handmade bandoliers, towels (for intrepid galactic hitchhikers), and so many more beautiful pieces of art! Chewbacchus is the future of revelry. We are an open source parade. Any and ALL sci-fi/fantasy/whatever-your-heart-desires costumes and themes are welcome. You can build and bring almost anything you want to roll in the parade. (Just make sure to follow the?guidelines) Seriously though… all parade contraptions must be pushed, pedaled, pulled or powered by electric motors (or particle propulsion).?Art cars are only allowed in the parade with approval from the overlords. The Krewe parade starts at the corner of Homer Plessey Way and Chartres St and parades down Chartres St, then turns right onto Franklin Ave. They then goes down Franklin Ave until it turns left onto St. Claude Ave. It parades on St. Claude Ave until it turns left on Elysian Fields Ave and then turns right on Dauphine St. then left on Frenchmen St. Toward the end of Frenchmen St. it veers right onto Decatur St., along the French Quarter and then turns right onto Conti St. where it ends.

Rex, aka School of Design, is the signature organization of New Orleans Mardi Gras and the Krewe of Rex has rolled out more parades than any other. Simply put, Rex is the well that creates Mardi Gras and our traditions, including the official Carnival colors of purple, green and gold displayed throughout the 3rd Coast. They also coined collectible doubloon beginning in 1960.
