#RedCrossNCGC volunteer Gary O'Connell is deployed with Red Cross disaster relief in South Carolina to help those affected by Hurricane #Helene. He recently spent the day handing out hot meals to residents who were without power for an extended period of time after the category 4 storm caused widespread damage. On this day, the Red Cross gave out more than 2,000 meals to families in the rural community of Ware Shoals, South Carolina. O'Connell, of Lusby, Maryland, is one of the roughly 80 local #RedCrossNCGC volunteers who are deployed across the South with the Red Cross to help people impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. He is pictured with Sandy Bandier, a Red Cross volunteer who used to live in Maryland but now lives in North Carolina. Financial donations to help people affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from these disasters. This week is Fire Prevention Week — an important time to protect your family against the threat of home fires by testing your smoke alarms and practicing your home fire escape plan. Home fires claim seven lives every day in the U.S. – but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. Here are three tips to make sure your smoke alarm will protect you: 1) Place smoke alarms on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. 2) Change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it. 3) Check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. #EndHomeFires
