After driving an emergency response vehicle from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, Brian Shaub, a Red Cross volunteer from Lancaster County, got right to work helping people impacted by Hurricane Helene. His first stop was providing hot meals in Del Rio, Tennessee, a town on the French Broad River, about 50 miles from Asheville, North Carolina.
“Everything was wiped out about 100 to 200 feet on either side of the river,” Brian said. “You wouldn’t even know there were houses along some parts of the river. There’s a lot of need here.”
Brian is now in Georgia and has delivered hundreds of hot meals to families affected by Helene. He shared that he and his teammate are connecting with local first responders and others in the community to help locate additional people in need.
“They know where the pain is, and once you find it, there’s a bunch more in the neighborhood.”
The American Red Cross is working nonstop, alongside our partners, to provide shelter, food, water, relief supplies and comfort to those coping with the destruction left behind by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The Red Cross has been helping people since this onslaught of devastating weather began and will be supporting people in the weeks and months to come.
