  • After driving an emergency response vehicle from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, Brian Shaub, a Red Cross volunteer from Lancaster County, got right to work helping people impacted by Hurricane Helene. His first stop was providing hot meals in Del Rio, Tennessee, a town on the French Broad River, about 50 miles from Asheville, North Carolina. “Everything was wiped out about 100 to 200 feet on either side of the river,” Brian said. “You wouldn’t even know there were houses along some parts of the river. There’s a lot of need here.” Brian is now in Georgia and has delivered hundreds of hot meals to families affected by Helene. He shared that he and his teammate are connecting with local first responders and others in the community to help locate additional people in need. “They know where the pain is, and once you find it, there’s a bunch more in the neighborhood.” The American Red Cross is working nonstop, alongside our partners, to provide shelter, food, water, relief supplies and comfort to those coping with the destruction left behind by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The Red Cross has been helping people since this onslaught of devastating weather began and will be supporting people in the weeks and months to come.

  • "I have family who have gone through a hurricane." Fred Mccorkle, of Altoona, has been a Red Cross volunteer for about two years. His usual role is transporting blood donations from Red Cross blood processing centers to local hospitals, but after hearing about the need for disaster volunteers, he jumped in to help and deployed to Florida, where he's serving meals to people affected by Hurricane Milton. Disasters this large require a team effort and we rely on community partners and generous donors to ensure we can mobilize quickly when it matters most. ??

  • Dozens of disaster workers from the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania are on the ground across the Southeast, caring for people impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Others, like Judy Hurtt of Harrisburg, are supporting disaster relief efforts virtually. She is helping on the Red Cross Reunification team, which helps families reconnect with their loved ones. After Hurricanes Helene and Milton, many communities were affected by widespread power outages and limited internet connectivity, making it difficult for people to contact their loved ones. Red Cross Reunification teams have been working tirelessly to help families reconnect with their loved ones. "I’m at my best when I’m helping people, so when someone responds that they’ve been in contact with their family or loved one, it fills me up, because I can relate," Judy said. "Every person I’ve connected with has been so grateful for the work we’re doing at the Red Cross." Thank you to Judy and all of the volunteers who are providing comfort to those coping with the unimaginable destruction caused by these storms.

In the wake of Hurricane Milton, our hearts go out to all those who have lost so much. Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year, following closely after Helene. It has left more than 3 million people without power, dropping over a foot of rain and spawning numerous tornadoes. Red Cross disaster teams remain on the ground in Florida, working closely with local officials and partners to understand exactly what people require and where Red Cross assistance is needed most. This is an immensely difficult time for communities across the Southeast, especially for Floridians. If you would like to help people affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene, here are three things you can do right now. ?? #Milton #Helene

  • The American Red Cross is working nonstop, alongside our partners, to support the 83,000 people taking refuge in Florida evacuation shelters as Hurricane Milton slammed into the state. It will be several days before we have a full grasp of the impact this storm had on communities across Central Florida. We will continue to offer safe shelter, comfort and care to those who need it. As Floridians struggle with the new damage from Milton, the Red Cross is working tirelessly in the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee to provide shelter, food, water, relief supplies and comfort to those still coping with the unimaginable destruction left behind by Hurricane Helene.
