Employee Appreciation Day was celebrated nationally yesterday, but truth be told, we appreciate everything this team does every day and night. We love any opportunity to celebrate our staff and all the hard work they do! From our housekeeping and facilities team keeping our hospital in tip top shape, to our administration team dotting our I's and crossing our T's, and of course our CSRs, technicians, assistants and veterinarians providing the most comprehensive and compassionate care to our clients and patients, we really do have so many amazing individuals to appreciate today and everyday. Please join us at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in thanking our team for all they do every day. Our beautifully new, state-of-the-art, 108,000 sq. ft. hospital would not be the amazing place it is without these inspiring individuals who fill its halls. ?????

In Recognition of National Pet Dental Health Month--Lorelai's Story, A "Rawr-ing Success" Lorelai's story begins when she went to her regular veterinarian for a routine dental cleaning. While Lorelai was under anesthesia her doctor discovered a large oral mass. Though able to perform the scaling and polishing of the teeth, they then referred Lorelai to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and Drs. Kevin Haggerty and Erica Greene of our Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department, to further evaluate and treat the mass. After reviewing the radiographs from Lorelai's doctor and performing an exam of their own, it was recommend to perform a CT scan to determine the extent of the oral mass and do a partial bilateral mandibulectomy, if Lorelai was an appropriate surgical candidate based on the CT imaging. Following the CT scan it was determined that Lorelai was a good candidate for the partial bilateral mandibulectomy, and she underwent the surgery successfully. After spending a day in the hospital under the expert care of our nurses and assistants, Lorelai was able to go home to her anxiously awaiting family. A partial bilateral mandibulectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part of both sides of the lower jaw bone. Lorelai, always a stunner of a cat, is possibly even more of a looker now with her cute little pink tongue exposed, a result of the parts of the jaw being removed. The photo gallery provided by her Dad showcases pictures of Lorelai both pre- and post surgery, and clearly she has not lost any of what makes her shine. And Lorelai is more than just a pretty kitty face, she is the "spokescat" for her Dad's pet product line, RAWRY. Check her out in all her modeling best here: https://rawrycat.com/

??Blanche the Boston...Once, Twice, Three Times a Patient?? Blanche, seen here with Dr. Katharine Salmeri, one of our board-certified surgeons, is a one-and-a-half-year-old Boston Terrier who we lovingly refer to as a "frequent flyer". Since March of 2024, Blanche has had 3 surgical procedures performed at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital by Dr. Salmeri and our surgical team. The first procedure performed in March of 2024 was a spay procedure and nares surgery. Blanche is what is classified as a brachycephalic breed of dog. Brachycephalic breeds include Bulldogs, Boxer Dogs, Boston Terriers, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Bull Mastiffs. Brachycephalic airway syndrome often affects these dogs and references upper airway abnormalities. One of these abnormalities is stenotic nares. Dogs with stenotic nares have narrowed or small nostrils. The narrowing of the nostrils restricts the amount of air that can flow into the lungs. When Blanche was anesthetized for her spay procedure, Dr. Salmeri also performed nares surgery which helps to open the airway making it easier for Blanche to breathe. Blanche's next visit to surgery was to treat her right hind leg. Both of Blanches hind legs had been diagnosed with medial patella luxation, a condition where the patella, or knee-cap, does not stay in its normal position in the groove on the end of the femur. In June of 2024 she had surgery to repair the right hind leg, followed by the left leg being repaired in July. Medial patellar luxation (MPL) surgery is performed to correct the luxation of the kneecap. Helping a young dog recover from an orthopedic procedure isn't easy. Blanche's mom deserves a lot of credit for keeping Blanche quiet and exercise restricted while she healed. Blanche did in fact heal beautifully, and at her most recent recheck appointment, just this week, she was doing fabulous! As much as we love Blanche and that smile, we hope she doesn't need Dr. Salmeri again for quite some time! ??

??The Mighty Mini Miss Mia ?? Mia, a 10-week-old chihuahua puppy, was admitted to our ICU, after originally presenting to our Emergency department for listlessness and some inappropriate defecation noticed by her attentive family. Mia had just two weeks earlier been adopted by her family and Mia's Mom, being very well versed in the breed, knew that Mia was not acting right. Mia spent 13 days in the ICU being treated for hypoglycemia, hypotension, anemia, respiratory distress and significant worm burden--she had both hookworms and roundworms, and also giardia, three intestinal parasites that wreak havoc on a pup's GI system. One of these diagnoses is hard enough for a tiny little thing like Mia to battle, let alone all of them together, but this fun-sized fighter did not give up. Mia received blood transfusions from our in-hospital blood bank while hospitalized, intravenous medications, and other supportive care to get her back to feeling like a puppy again.?? Her tenacious spirit and loving family's dedication to her can partially be credited for Mia's successful recovery, but undoubtedly the round-the-clock care provided by our ICU team played a big part in getting this little lady home where she belongs. Mia's grateful family exclaimed "My husband and I are very grateful to Courtney O’Connor, DVM, Kelsea Studer, DVM and the rest of the terrific staff in ICU. Everyone was kind. They took great care of our little Mia. They all have a genuine love for animals."??? After 13 days with our doctors, technicians and assistants, a patient becomes like family to our team, and Mia was no exception. She may be teeny, but her presence was huge and she was missed as soon as she was discharged. Thankfully we all get to see her when she comes for her routine checkups with our General Practice Department. ??

????Feel Good Friday Blood Donor Awareness Month--Blizzard and the Boys???? Blizzard, this absolute beauty queen of a Great Dane has been a blood donor for four years. She is far from alone at home in her life-saving endeavors; blood donors run in her family. Her feline brothers, Vinnie, the domestic short hair, and Lorenzo, the Maine Coon, are both donors. Vinnie has been donating for an impressive 8 years, and Lorenzo, adopted 4 years ago, has been a donor ever since. These three life savers usually travel together to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital to visit our team at the Wyatt Goldthwaite Veterinary Blood Bank, making donating a family affair. The staff loves walking by the blood bank's windowed doors and seeing Blizz's big head sticking up, while Lorenzo lounges out on a chair, not a care in the world, and Vinny enjoys his Churro, having completed his donation. This trio's mom, Andrea, knows the importance of canine and feline blood donations more so than most. She worked for years on the front lines as a triage nurse in the veterinary field, and witnessed many instances when blood product saved a pet's life. To have her furry family members be a part of the life saving process just made sense--like mother, like kids. ???? Think your cat or dog(or both) may make a great blood donor? Want to learn more about this exciting program and the incentives that come with donating? Email Jessie and Bri at [email protected], and start your pets on their journey to becoming life saving blood donors. ??

January is Adopt-A-Rescue-Bird Month, a month dedicated to celebrating rescue birds and also bringing attention to the thousands of abandoned and neglected birds who are waiting for their forever homes. January also happens to be one very special recsue bird's birthday month! ???? Sherbie, who turned a spry 34-years-old on January 4th, is the beloved cockatoo of one of our veterinary nurses, and a regular fixture here at the hospital. He never fails to entertain staff with his array of outfits and his upbeat personailty. Sherbie was rescued several years back from a previous owner who could no longer care for him, and he has been lovingly cared for by our team member ever since. To celebrate his birthday the In Patient team threw him a birthday party complete with his own cake, gifts and singing. Red Bank Veterinary Hospital doesn't have an official mascot, but if we did, Sherbie would definitely be in the running! The doctors, technicians and assitants in our Avian and Exotics Department provide top notch care to Sherbie and all their patients, ensuring this handsome man will be around for many more birthday celebrations.????

????Feel Good Friday--Celebrating Sibling Blood Donors for Blood Donor Awareness Month???? Parents of multiples, be they humans or pets, raise your hands!!??♀? You know how hard it is to get everyone to sit still, have their eyes open, or even look at the camera for just one decent picture. Kudos to Michelle for getting her three furry kids to somewhat participate in this family picture when requested for this post. But hey, these three aren't your average pets, they are hero blood donors in our Wyatt Goldthwaite Blood Donor Program, and heroes always rise to the task!! Macaroni, or Mac, the handsome cat is a foster fail that Michelle had in her care from the SPCA. When it was clear her "pasta man" was going nowhere and had found his forever home with her, she signed him up for the blood donor program, following in his canine siblings footsteps, and this beefy man has been a donor rock star ever since, particularly happy to donate when Churros are involved. Colby Jack and Misty are both donors who combined have saved over 40 lives with their blood donations. Their other canine sister, Penny Banana, not pictured, also donates, and has dozens of lives saved credited to her as well. Michelle, a veteran ICU technician at RBVH, adopted both Colby Jack and Misty, aka Mims, through rescues. Mims was brought in to the hospital to be spayed, after being flown from Puerto Rico and having been used as a bait dog, and Michelle fell in love, contacted the rescue and snatched her right up. Colby Jack is another foster fail of Michelle's, adopted through Pick Your Paw rescue. Both dogs went from needing to be rescued, to rescuing the pets who receive their donations--a true testament not only to the power of animal rescue, but to the beauty of signing a pet up to be a canine or feline blood donor, and the full circle moments that can create. This picture may not be "picture perfect", Mac may have refused to look at his Mom, a purrfectly defiant ginger, but these three siblings are as close to perfect as they come. They are selfless heroes who love coming in to donate, delighting in not only the fear free and painless process of the donation, but also the love and treats they get from Jessie and Bri, our incomparable Blood Bank team.
