RED January is turning 10! Together let’s Rise Every Day and move to boost your mood this winter.

关于我们

RED (Rise Every Day) January is a global initiative that empowers people to move to boost their mood. Hannah Beecham MBE was inspired to launch RED January after witnessing the positive impact that regular physical activity had on her mum’s mental health during the winter. It’s time of year that can be challenging for us all, with evidence of lower activity levels, mood and energy. Since the launch back in 2014, the RED community has grown in support and strength, with hundreds of thousands of people joining to prioritise their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their communities through fundraising, so far raising over £3.2 million. RED’s ambition is to make January a more positive and energising month of the year for everyone, with the RED communities fundraising efforts helping to drive real change in local communities year-round.

RED January in the House of Commons! It’s truly heartwarming to hear that RED January has been recognised in the House of Commons as "a nationwide campaign committed to reversing the significant decline in movement during the winter months." This recognition is testament to the incredible RED community - each supporting their own well-being, whilst lifting up those around them. It highlights the vital role that RED January, and other community-driven initiatives, play in creating a healthier, more connected society. As RED enters its next decade, one of our core commitments remains stronger than ever - to transform recognition into real, lasting change.

What happens after January? We often hear that if you can regularly move through January - the darkest and coldest month - just imagine what you can do all year round. REDer Simon’s inspiring journey is proof of the power of community, building movement habits that work for the individual, and meaningful partnerships, like the one with Decathlon UK. Simon's story is a reminder that RED January isn’t?just about one month - it’s about creating a foundation for year-round well-being.

1500 days of RED January. Starting early on December 31 2020 I joined RED January . The aim: to move a bit every day for one month. Yesterday marked 1500 days. I’ve spoken about RED at conferences & in content, so you’d think I’d have a good rehearsed line about it now! But looking back on 1500 days is a bit different. Two big benefits. 1. The framework to recover from paralysis. I had Guillain Barre Syndrome 1 April 2018. The worst April Fools ever! Initially I was asking if I’d be able to start my dream job a few days later, quickly I understood I may not live that long! Blind, organ failure & paralysed - I was in hospital for a few weeks. I was released home where I rested & slowly recovered. I spent 15 of my 30 minutes on my feet each day using a cross trainer. I just wanted to be me again. Cognitive function going, organ failure - lots of lovely things were happening but I was determined. I got to the fittest I’d been since I was 18. Then in June 2024 it happened again. Not as severe, but more traumatic emotionally. I’m still not back to where I was, I may never be. Despite the relapse I managed to keep RED going. That framework saved me. Without it, I doubt I’d be doing so well. It’s given me a base to build on but also fall back on. 2. The second is the most important: the community. Initially RED exercise were riding a bike on my own around covid restrictions. I enjoyed it. But I vividly remember speaking to Georgie at hockey as restrictions eased & the absolute relief I felt seeing her. My friends are mainly through sport. So I appreciated more than ever that network. Talking to friends about issues, having each others backs. It’s everything. Compiling photos for this post I saw so many dear friends & loved ones. parkrun with my parents, kids, Rob, Caroline, Natalie, Minnie & Sarah. Construction work with siblings. Kayaking with Katie. Walks along the beach with Michelle & Amy. Trips to the outdoor gym with the kids. Cycling with the Korok crew. Weightlifting with Katy. Umpiring with hundreds of people, in five different countries. Playing hockey with thousands of people. Badminton with Coralie and Olivier. So much more. That time with friends & loved ones is precious. Particularly when you’ve had serious health issues. I’ve said it before but it warrants repeating - CSR partnerships can make a difference. This is an example of it changing someone for the better, in a sustainable way. So thank you to Hannah Beecham MBE who founded RED, Delphine who made the partnership happen and Decathlon UK for making it part of the culture. To my friends, family, volunteers, umpires, players, coaches & so many more. This has been beautiful. (And yes I’ve kept going on day 1,501 and beyond!) #REDJanuary #REDTogether #MentalHealth #Health #Exercise #Paralysis #ParalysisRecovery
