Sixteen New Alzheimer's Disease Susceptibility Genes Discovered Investigators from Mass General Brigham have conducted a multi-ancestry, whole genome sequencing association study of Alzheimer's disease and found evidence for 16 new susceptibility genes, expanding the study of Alzheimer's disease in underrepresented groups. The work is?published?in the?Alzheimer's & Dementia?journal. "We hope this will lead to more accurate predictions of Alzheimer's disease risk and to new pharmacological and biological targets for treatment and prevention in populations with various ancestries." said?co-senior author Rudolph Tanzi, Ph.D., director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit, the McCance Center for Brain Health, and co-director of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. Smell Test - Brain Health Study Now Enrolling: Smell Test Direct - The Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). Smell loss is linked to Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research is asking everyone age 40 and older with and without Parkinson’s in the United States and Canada to take a simple scratch-and-sniff test. This could help scientists learn more about risk of brain disease and develop new treatments. The overall goal of PPMI is to identify markers of disease progression for use in clinical trials for new drug development to treat or even prevent PD before it begins.
