Empowering workplaces to provide support for people recovering from substance use disorder.
关于我们
The Recovery Friendly Workplace initiatives are emerging across the United States as crucial interventions in tackling substance use disorders (SUDs), the opioid overdose crisis, and mental health issues. An RSW program aims to proactively prevent SUDs and alleviate mental health challenges by fostering a healthy and secure workplace, offering assistance to struggling employees, and facilitating opportunities for individuals in recovery to reintegrate into or enter the workforce. The profound impact of untreated mental health issues and substance use disorders on workers, employers, and communities is evident. On August 31, 2022, the White House, during National Recovery Month, issued a proclamation advocating for workplace policies in both the public and private sectors to promote inclusive hiring, empower employers to aid in the recovery process, and support companies in retaining talent. Recovery Supportive Workplaces (RSWs) contribute to their communities by recognizing recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges as strengths and by actively collaborating with individuals in recovery. RSWs promote a conducive and safe environment where employers, employees, and communities collaborate to effect positive change and remove obstacles for those facing addiction and mental health struggles. To fortify workplace culture, the staff of Recovery Supportive Workplaces will offer training, guidance, and technical support to assist interested companies in adopting evidence-based practices tailored to their specific needs. These dedicated RSW staff members will aid in the development and sustainability of RSW initiatives in workplaces, and their services come at no cost. By establishing a recovery-supportive environment, employers convey a resolute message to their communities, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of a solution-focused approach to addressing addiction and behavioral health directly.

Today, the BHDDH office came together to raise awareness about men’s mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer. ?? Your energy, conversations, and support made this event truly special. Movember is more than a month – it’s a movement to prioritize well-being and create spaces where everyone feels supported. Let’s keep these conversations going year-round! Thank you to everyone who participated and showed up for the men in our lives. Together, we’re making a difference. ?? #Movember #MensMentalHealth #TeamSupport

As we charge through Movember with our mission to create a workplace where everyone feels supported and valued, let’s pause to unpack a statistic that hits harder than a surprise Zoom meeting on a Friday afternoon: Men are 40% less likely than women to seek help for mental health concerns. Why? Societal stigmas and that old, outdated mantra to “tough it out.” It’s like refusing to ask for directions on a road trip—only this time, the stakes are much higher than just winding up in the wrong town. While we’ve made progress in encouraging men to reach out for help (a big win!), here’s the kicker: many stop after just one or two engagements. Why? Because they feel unheard or misunderstood. It’s as if they’ve signed up for karaoke night and no one hands them the mic. So, yes, let’s keep spreading the message that asking for help is a sign of strength. But let’s also double down on making sure the support we offer truly connects with men—support that listens, understands, and says, “Hey, we’ve got your back.” Because when men feel heard, they’re more likely to keep showing up—and that’s a win for all of us. #Movember #RhodeIsland #Men #MentalHealth

Strength has nothing to do with silence. Men experience anxiety, insecurities, trauma, and mental health challenges, yet too often they’re told to ‘man up’ or stay quiet. This toxic expectation isolates them, leaving them to suffer alone. Vulnerability is not weakness—it’s courage. Men deserve spaces to be heard, supported, and understood. A simple conversation or a genuine check-in can save a life. Stop dismissing their pain. Stop treating their struggles as shameful. It’s time to change the narrative and show men that their mental health matters too. Support the men in your life. Speak up. Show up. Their lives depend on it. #MensMentalHealth #EndTheStigma #SupportMen

"Today, we celebrate International Men's Day—a day to recognize the positive contributions of men in our lives and communities. It’s a moment to champion their role as friends, fathers, leaders, and mentors while also encouraging open conversations about health, well-being, and equality. Let’s celebrate, support, and inspire the men in our world. ?? #InternationalMensDay #MensHealth #PositiveRoleModels"

As Program Liaison for BHDDH's recovery housing program, I enjoy visiting our contracted organizations and learning more about their programs. I spent the morning at Amos House with Executive Director Eileen Hayes visiting the recovery house for men called "Fatherhood", which is a reunification program for dads seeking custody of their kids. Amos House is one of many organizations that provide recovery housing to Rhode Island citizens. Great program and great people! Want to learn more about recovery housing in Rhode Island?
