As your students are approaching finals, have them do some anticipatory problem solving. That is, talk with them about how they will handle failure and disappointment if their semester does not go as well as expected. https://lnkd.in/eK4knJQE

Recognize Your Potential (RYP) helps educators, business professionals, and individuals succeed. How? By helping them answer the question, “What creates the need to achieve in humans and what drives success?” As the founder of RYP, I help you figure out the answer to this question for you and/or your organization. RYP delivers individual consultations, workshops and programs, professional development services, external reviews, and keynotes that empower individuals and organizations to reach their potential. Since my background is in achievement motivation, personality psychology, and counseling, I approach the work from this perspective. When individuals and organizations must achieve goals and manage change, there is an inherent tendency to “get stuck.” What I'm passionate about is helping individuals and organizations “get moving,” whether they're students who want to make the honor roll or dean’s list, educators who wish to improve their teaching, administrators in need of developing and implementing successful programs, or leaders faced with managing strategic goals and projects. I support individuals to adjust their mental processes (mindsets), so they can enact particular behaviors (strategies) to “recognize their potentials.” I help organizations with workplace culture and change management. Carl Rogers, an influential psychologist, said that every human has a “phenomenal field” made up of their subjective experiences containing our needs, attitudes, and feelings. Sometimes, within that phenomenal field, there are obstacles to our ability to grow, develop, and enact positive change. The same phenomenon occurs in organizations. The phenomenal field of workplace culture can create barriers to success. My aim is to challenge individuals and individuals and organizations to dig deep, reflect, and identify roadblocks that prevent them from reaching their potentials, and as a result, making their phenomenal fields, well, phenomenal.

Do you teach a first-year experience or student success class? Have you had a conversation with your students about the Thanksgiving break and how that will impact the homestretch of their semester?
With Thanksgiving approaching, now is the time to ask your students how they will sustain motivation on the homestretch of the semester. The Thanksgiving break can sometimes break momentum! Ask them if they know what assessments are remaining in each of their classes. This article also offers some practical tips to keep them focused and motivated! If you are in upper administration making decisions about student success, this article is worth the read. Give your colleagues who have professional practice knowledge a "seat at the table." While this term is a bit overused, many times, student success professionals may get a seat at the table, but their professional practice knowledge is not taken seriously and applied integrally into student success and retention initiatives.
As someone who has been in higher education for 35 years and was one of the do-ers on my campus, I appreciate the perspective of Melissa Young, VP of Student Success at Columbus State University: "But we also have to be careful that we’re not burning out and wearing out the individuals who are the doers on our campus, trying to move the needle forward so quickly." She sees the professionals on her campus who are doing all the heavy lifting. Kudos to her!!! The field needs more leaders with her perspective and mindset. https://lnkd.in/ehCMNX5d
