How can we revolutionize emergency care in environments where traditional blood transfusions aren't possible? Our #HealLA 2024 cohort member, ReBlood Rx, is developing polymerized hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) designed to improve remote damage control resuscitation (RDCR). This groundbreaking technology, led by founders Carlos J. Munoz, CEO, and Christopher Caballero, COO, targets environments where traditional crystalloids fall short due to their lack of oxygen-carrying capacity, offering a practical substitute for blood transfusions. ?? Carlos J. Munoz shares, "In the next 5-10 years, ReBlood Rx envisions a fully cleared FDA product for pre-hospital care situations where blood is needed but not available, increasing medical capabilities for people living in rural environments." This innovation has the potential to revolutionize field medicine, eliminating the need for refrigeration, crossmatching, and supply issues, ultimately enhancing the care provided by combat medics and pre-hospital care providers. Kudos to two UC San Diego startups — ReBlood Rx and AquaMesh — which are among the 23 student ventures selected from around the country to participate in VentureWell's Summer 2024 E-Team Program! Both teams received a $20,000 Stage 2 grant, and will take part in the Propel workshop, part of VentureWell’s nationally recognized Early-Stage Innovator Training Program, which provides student teams with the training, coaching, and peer networking opportunities that will help them launch their innovation. ReBlood Rx is led by bioengineering PhD alumnus Carlos J. Munoz and bioengineering PhD student Daniela Lucas, with support from bioengineering Professor Cabrales Pedro. The company developed a reliable oxygen delivery system to treat hemorrhagic shock in environments where blood availability and robust resuscitation capabilities are limited. ReBlood Rx is also an Institute for the Global Entrepreneur UC San Diego portfolio company. AquaMesh is led by bioinformatics graduate student Arya M., computer engineering alumnus Alexander Towfigh and electrical engineering alumnus David Truong, with support from Jacques Chirazi, director of The Basement at UC San Diego. AquaMesh developed a comprehensive water monitoring system using machine learning software and modular sensor technology, delivering precise real-time analysis to efficiently streamline water quality monitoring and replace the need for lab testing.
