Dad. Three letters that mean so much. If you're a dad or thinking of becoming a dad you have the most important and rewarding role you'll ever have. You have the opportunity to mold but also be molded. I could list a bunch of things you should do to be a "successful" dad, but being a good father comes in many shapes and forms so no need to preach to you here. One thing I've learned as a dad that has made me a better person and entrepreneur is that I can learn as much from son as he can learn from me. Just today he told me a quote that really resonated.... "If you want to buy something without looking at the price tag, then you have to be able to work without looking at the clock." As a dadpreneur this hit home, and how cool that my son is the one who picked up on it. The one bit of advice I will suggest is this....Be present. Your kids will grow up much much faster than you realize. They won't remember the important business meetings but they will remember if you were present for sporting events, dinner, and bedtime. Being a dad is arguably the most important role I will ever have. Jobs, startups, work, etc. will come and go. But the lasting impact and memories I impart on my son will last much longer, intentional or not, which is why these lessons are so important. This is part of why I created REBL Dads, to help dads be better leaders at home and work. I love this article by Holly Branson on the Seven Lesson she's learned from her dad, Richard Branson. Here are her 7 lessons: 1. Always be present? 2. Respect everyone’s right to be who they want to be 3. When you feel you can’t, know that you can?? 4. Find the thing that makes you jump out of bed in the morning, and work won’t feel like work at all?? 5. Family comes first, always? 6. Never lose your sense of childlike wonder?? 7. Always ask yourself, how do I make the future better? These are all brilliant and I would be hard pressed to tell you my favorite. Your kids don't care how much you make or how successful you are. They won't remember the deals you closed, BUT will remember the dinners, bedtimes, birthday parties, and sporting events you missed. Here's some food for thought and my top tip on how to be there more for your kids. "75% of the time you’ll ever get to spend with your kids is over by the time they turn 12. 90% of your time with them is gone by the time they’re 18.” When I first became a dad it felt like I had plenty of time to be a good parent, we've got 18 years before they leave home right? I focused on being an entrepreneur, on working a ton, and even when I was home my mind was elsewhere. I think we all struggle with this. But time does fly and I started to notice a void I was feeling with my kid. No deal or amount of money will ever fill this void, only quality time with your kids will. My top tip for not missing time and special moments with your kids is..... ?? Include them in your life ?? Here's a couple of ways I do this: ?? Take them on trips, even business trips. I bring my wife and son with me as much as possible. ?? Schedule time with your kids before anything work related. We call this "Team Papa Time". It's special father-son time. ?? Ask them what they want to do and then go do it! Like this quad-biking experience that my son found for us. Our kids are our future. Part of setting them up for success is teaching them about money, business, etc. of course but also showing them that you love them and prioritize them over this thing we call work. This is for all the dads out there. Here are some thoughts on "male loneliness" and tips to deal with it. I just read an article about what is being called the "male loneliness epidemic". I'm not sure if it's an epidemic, but the article resonated with me. As a dad and entrepreneur (dadpreneur) I have felt some of what's described in this article (https://lnkd.in/eSFRWS5h) but also have found that I'm not on an island. Funny side note, I actually live on an island and just brought together a group of dadpreneurs for the REBL Dads Gathering on Necker Island, so good things do happen on islands! If you're a dad, here are some interesting takeaways from the article and some tips I've found useful: ??"The reasons why some men feel worthless is because of a lack of friendships, especially among fathers, the experts say." ?? "...many fathers are having a hard time finding connection and friendship — and this applies to both fathers who work remotely from home and those who go into a place of work every day." ??"Men who express their vulnerability, which is usually necessary to form close friendships, are often afraid they will be viewed as weak, or less than a man. It’s a stigma that may be outdated, but one that sadly still exists." So if you're feeling some or all of this what can you do? Here are some tips: ?? Find a safe place where you can be vulnerable and share with other dads. And make sure you SHARE. Don't preach or tell people what to do or what they did wrong. Share your experiences so others can hopefully learn from them. ?? Know that you aren't tied to what your father did, or didn't do, and that you can create your own path. ??It's OK to focus on being a better father. When you do you become a better spouse, partner, role model, and of course dad. Like the pre-flight safety announcement says; "put on your own mask before helping others." Again, I'm not sure if we have an epidemic on our hands but I do know that being a dad can be lonely and that it's OK to look for help. How do you get from Idea to Result? Action. Here's advice on how to go from A-Z that you can use to find success in business and life. This picture is the result of 18+ months of action. With so many things in life these days it's easy to think that "overnight success" is real. It's easy to think that things will just go our way. Want to start a business? No problem, just post some cool stuff on social and watch it take off. Want to work from anywhere? No problem, just get a laptop and frequent flyer card. In reality things worth doing tend to take a lot more work (action) and time. Here's what I suggest you do to accomplish whatever it is you're pursuing: 1) Define and crystalize your vision. In my example it was creating a community of REBL Dads and bringing them all together for a collective mastermind with SRB on Necker Island. 2) Define action steps, things that need to get done, in order for your idea to become reality. I wrote down all the things that needed to get done. 3) Identify Who will do What to make it all happen. If possible find people to help you do the things that need to get done, but realize you may just have to do it yourself for awhile! 4) Take action. Just start. Make progress every day. Bonus tip: Things will not go according to plan so be ready to pivot and deal with adversity (usually from unseen sources) as they happen. Above all of this, I have found that in order to get the Result I desired the single most important thing I did was stay true to my Vision. It was the guiding light and having it come to fruition is the most amazing and rewarding feeling. Who do you work for? "I work for my team." My friend Jayson Lowe said this during one of our REBL Dads mastermind sessions on Necker Island last month. As a CEO, Founder, Husband, and Father it really struck a chord with me. When we have the mindset of working for our team instead of them working for us all sorts of great things can happen. Most visionaries are bad operators. Visionaries see a future reality they want to realize, but often lack the execution abilities to get it done by themselves, thus the importance of a team. If you look at successful people a common trait you will find is that they surround themselves with great people. They then share the vision, turn it into a collective vision, and then the visionary goes to work for the team to help them best execute the plan. My advice to anyone looking to make their vision a reality is to surround yourself with people that see your vision, add to it in a meaningful way, and help you make it a reality.
