?? Cultural Insights: Navigating Danish Workplace Culture ?? Starting work in Denmark can be both exciting and challenging for internationals. With unique elements like flat hierarchies and an emphasis on work-life balance, adapting to Danish workplace norms can take some getting used to. Here are ten practical tips for integrating smoothly into Danish workplaces: 1?? Understand the Flat Hierarchy: Danish companies value open discussion—feel free to share ideas regardless of rank! 2?? Respect Work-Life Balance: Work is important, but personal time is too! Expect a 37-hour work week, with flexibility for family and personal activities. 3?? Engage Socially: Team-building events like "Friday bars" are a great way to bond with colleagues. 6?? Direct Communication: Danes prefer clear, respectful communication—address issues openly. 7?? Appreciate Danish Humour: Light-hearted, self-deprecating humour is common and brings people together. 8?? Independent Work Planning: Flexible hours are typical, with a focus on delivering results. 9?? Learn Some Danish Etiquette: A few phrases and holiday customs can go a long way. ?? Leverage Support Systems: Use feedback channels—Danish workplaces encourage open conversations. ?? The Power of Children's Integration in Denmark: Building Stronger Communities ?? When families move to Denmark, a key factor in their decision to stay is how well their children adjust. ?? Research shows that kids who feel supported and connected—through schools, clubs, and community groups—help their parents feel more at home too! ??? According to ChildFund Australia, parents often form lasting friendships and social networks through their kids' activities. ?? These connections reduce isolation and make Denmark feel like home. Harvard research also highlights that schools and activities are community lifelines, bringing families together to share, support, and grow. ?????????? At Realising Retention, we know that supporting children's integration isn’t just about academics ??; it’s about creating a strong sense of belonging for the whole family. ?? ?? Helping Your Child Thrive in a Danish School ?? Moving to a new country is a big adventure—especially for kids adapting to a new school! ?? If you’re navigating this journey in Denmark, here are ten tips to help your child settle in and thrive: 1. ???? Embrace the Language: Danish is key! ??? Many schools offer language classes, but practicing Danish at home can help make it second nature. 2. Understand Danish School Culture ??: Independence and responsibility are big here! Encourage your child to engage openly, voice their opinions, and get comfortable with teamwork and solo projects. 3. Build Social Connections ??: Arrange playdates, join sports, or explore clubs! These activities are a great way for your child to make friends and feel included. 4. Get Familiar with the Routines ??: Danish schools can feel relaxed—kids even call teachers by their first names! It’s a new experience but can make school feel more personal. 5. Encourage Independence ??: Kids are encouraged to take charge of their learning. Teach them to handle their tasks and feel confident in their abilities. 6. Collaborate with Teachers ????: Build an open relationship with teachers, as Danish schools work closely with parents to support students’ growth. 7. Explore Inclusive Education ??: Danish classrooms are diverse, fostering a strong sense of inclusion. Preparing your child to embrace different perspectives will help them feel right at home. 8. Celebrate Democracy in the Classroom ??: Danish schools emphasize democratic values, encouraging students to make decisions and share their thoughts—empower your child to join in! 9. Tap into Support Services ??: Many schools offer programs tailored to help international students integrate. Use these resources to make the transition easier. 10. Stay Patient ???: Adjusting takes time, and every child’s journey is unique. Encourage your child to take things one step at a time—and remind them it’s okay to ask for help! These small steps can help your child feel at home in their new Danish school! ?? What’s one thing you think would help ease a school transition for kids? ?? Get to Know Us! ??Meet the Founders of Realising Retention ???? Who Are We? We are two founders with a shared passion for helping internationals thrive in Denmark, drawing from both personal and academic experiences: ???? Mirela Yoakimova Kafalieva ???? A Bulgarian native who moved to Denmark at 19 When I first arrived in Denmark, I felt the weight of being in a new country with a different language, culture, and way of life. I didn’t know anyone, and there were many moments where I questioned whether I’d ever feel like I belonged here. But through my own journey of navigating Danish society, learning the language, and finding my place, I developed a deep understanding of what internationals go through. This experience is what drives my passion for Realising Retention – I know firsthand the challenges that internationals face and how vital it is to create support systems that help people feel truly integrated, both in their workplaces and in their communities. I’ve made it my mission to make this transition easier for others, so they can build fulfilling lives here, just like I did. ???? Kathrine Ellen J?rgensen ???? Half-Danish, half-Jamaican-English, and a true third-culture kid Growing up between Sweden, Japan, China, and Denmark from ages 3 to 11, I’ve always felt like I lived in two worlds – never quite fully belonging to one culture. Being a third-culture kid shaped my ability to adapt and understand different perspectives, but it also taught me how challenging it can be to feel at home in a new place. As someone who doesn’t "look" typically Danish, many Danes are surprised to learn that I am one of them. This constant balancing act between my Danish heritage and my international upbringing has given me a unique understanding of what it means to bridge cultures. It’s also given me an empathetic approach to helping internationals find their footing in Danish society. At Realising Retention, my goal is to use these experiences to create smoother transitions for international employees and their families. I want them to not only adapt but truly feel connected – whether through our workshops, community-building, or helping businesses understand the value of diversity. It’s about creating that sense of belonging I’ve always searched for myself. These insights fuel our mission to create inclusive environments where internationals don’t just adapt but thrive. With empathy and expertise, we’re dedicated to helping Danish SMEs foster cultural understanding, build connections, and enhance retention for a brighter, more inclusive future. #RealisingRetention #SMEs #InternationalTalent #CulturalIntegration #DiversityAndInclusion #EmployeeRetention #InclusiveWorkplaces #ThirdCultureKids #HumanResources #Denmark
