Another “hot” CPI print Consumer prices continue to climb in the United States in the early months of 2024. The cost of shelter (red line in chart below) and electricity (blue line) are two areas of economic activity in our society where supply is not keeping up with growing demand. The result is their prices are rising faster than the overall consumer price index (green line). ??During the past 12 months, the CPI has increased by 3.5 percent while electricity prices are up 5.0 percent, and the cost of shelter has increased 5.7 percent. The electricity and housing shortages will take years, and a lot of investment dollars, to address.?And higher interest rates will hinder – not help – the process of increasing supply.?A medium-term inflation rate that averages around 2 percent is not looking like a realistic goal at the moment. ? ?Douglas Cliggott | Provincetown, MA | 11 April 2024 ?
